I have just purchased a Farmall A and would like to know its age. I have a number taken from a plate on the right side of the differential housing just ahead of the belt pully. [looking from behind] The number is 252854. I cant seem to match it up with anything. Please help. Thanks Harold.

The serial plate is supposed to be on the left seat support bracket. Perhaps somenone moved it. Should be preceded by FAA. The number matches a 1948 Super A.

Harold: I agree with Ken, Super A numbers started with 250,000. All A numbers would be under 250,000. Does your tractor have hydraulics? That is a good indicator as very few Super A did not have hydraulics. The records show no A had hydraulics. There was some discussion on here awhile back suggesting a few A had hydraulics. I'm not satisfied we really ever got to the bottom of that.

In 1948 my uncle had a tractor labeled Farmall A with hydraulics, he bought it new. Problem is I don't know serial number. There were a few other such postings, but they all had loop holes. Knowing what we know about IH, they may have had loop holes as well. Serial number is still safest bet.
