Farmal A leaky head gasket-whats the fix?

I'm new to tractors but bought a Farmal A that needed some work. The head gasket was leaking oil so I carefully replaced the gasket with a new one and torgued it to 80 ft/lbs. I ran it for a short time to get the engine hot, the after cooling re-torqued it again. Still leaks.
Now I'm beginning to think that maybe that was a common problem with the "A"s and those engines. Am I right or is there a fix?... Mike

Where is it leaking oil...on which side of the head and by what? The reason I ask is because there is an oil passage that goes up to the rocker arms thru a stud and that stud has a oil delivery hole in it that does have to be lined up with the rocker arm correctly. This stud is the center stud of the rocker arms and is on the spark plug side of the engine between plugs 2 and 3. Are you leaking oil above those two plugs? If so you might have a problem with this stud and it's alignment. If the oil can not get out the hole to the rocker arms then the pressure could build up and possible leak out at the head gasket.

Pete

No, it is not a common problem for a Farmall A to leak oil from the head gasket. The last few head gaskets I put on required sealer and retorque. Did you use sealer?
If you have all that covered, then you may have a problem that a gasket won't fix, such as a crack in the head or block deck. Or a warped head.
A good machine shop can check them both for cracks and warpage. I wouldn't use 2 head gaskets if I could avoid it.

Forgive me for asking some stupid questions, but.....
Did you follow the proper sequence when torqueing the head?
Are you sure the oil was leaking from the head, and not the valve cover?
If you torqued the valve cover to 80, it would be deformed and never seal. You would need to get another valve cover, or straighten the lip on the one you have.
I apoligize if these questions seem ignorant, but you did mention "new to tractors".
Just trying to help..... ...Stan

You may have a warped head/block. Sometimes a problem like that can be fixed by putting 2 head gaskets on it helps fill the gap that just one can't. you also may need to have the head shaved to take out the warp if it is warped that is.
