Hi,
I have a farmall 300 and would like to know if it possible to put 10W-30 in it for the winter instead of the regular non-detergent 30W? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes, as others have stated you may have an issue with sludge developing as your engine starts to clean itself out.

I usually run straight 10-10W in my M in the winter but if it gets below -20 F I will even go to 5W-20 in the winter here in the SD tundra. I've never seen any problems with the light oil in the winter unless you are doing consistant extremely heavy loads. In the summer 15W-40 or 30 weight is a good choice.

Steve: Personally I wouldn't look at anything unless it were detergent oil. If you do change to detergent oil, don't run the first fill up more than about 30 to 50 hours. The last tractor I changed to detergent oil had about 3/4" of silt in bottom of pan after about 35 hours. I had to poke my finger through that so oil would drain. Then remove pan and clean. I did that 3 times before silt stopped forming. It did have a filter, but also was a very dirty engine. It cleaned right up and is still going, although it will require a rebuild before long.

I never use anything but diesel service 15W-40 motor oils, winter and summer in everything from 6 cylinder turbo diesels, 4 cylinder gas Farmalls, V8 and V6 cars and trucks and 4 cycle lawn mower. By the way lawn mower is 28 years old, same engine. I put a 1/2 million miles on a 6.2 Chevy diesel, no rebuilds. I started this because 35 years ago I was using 3 kinds of oil in 9 trctors, 4 trucks, car, combine and the lawn mower. Employees couldn't seem to keep straight what oil went where. I solved problem by using 1 type of oil only. It started out as single viscosity 30 in summer and 20 in winter. About 20 years ago I switched to the 15W-40, and have never looked back. I live in Canada with winter as it is.

I was always under the impression that if an engine had a filter, you used detergent and ND if there was no filter. The detergent cleans and floats the crud to the filter where its trapped.Do that in an engine without a filter and the crap will plug everything up.Best to let the solids hit bottom....without the detergents....if not equipped with a filtering element.
