I see looking thru the archives here that there are a lot of 300 Utility tractors still alive and kicking, and that right now they seem to be the hot ticket for an entry-level tractor in the old "vintage" tractor world.I bought mine last weekend, and plan on using it for snow removal (had factory loader attachment).I think it would be neat if owners of 300U's could post a reply to this posting, and if they could state what they use theirs for.300U owners unite! lol

A nicely fixed-up 300U (new engine, new paint, but not a lot of fancy cosmetics done) followed us home a few months back.

We used it with a 6-foot light-duty rotary mower
for pasture maintenance during the warm months
in PA. It was a vast improvement over the little
John Deere 855 we had been using. I think it even
turns tighter than the green baby.

The mower deck ends up doing a lot of duty moving
heavy or bulky items from here to there, as well.

The 7-foot blade is now on, awaiting the snow.

3-point is the 'prong' type adapters, might be a pain if you changed implements daily, but quite nice if you change seasonally.

We have a 12-volt conversion with the little Jap alternator in the box, but have failed to locate a round tuit as of yet.

This weekend, after two weeks off and a cold snap, she wouldn't start. Found the hot wire
to the solenoid loose (by the smoke). Tightening
twisted off the copper stud, probably due to galvanic corrosion between the ferrous nut and the copper stud. Local Deere dealer had an exact
replacement in the Napa box. Starts are more vigorous now, but she's also on the trickle charger.

Chains from tirechains.com went on this weekend.
That's almost like work! Those tensioners they
sell are a 'must.'

If I had infinite time and funds, I'd want a new steering box with no play, and all new throttle bits with no play, and all the stainless
placards, etc., in place. But we all work for a living. Including the 300U.

Very satisfied with the machine, particularly
having independent PTO and live hydraulics.

To me, the 300 utility has 90% of the vintage
panache of, for example, an H. But it has 95%
of the 'utility' of a modern tractor (save
perhaps for power steering, which I really
don't find that I miss that much for our uses).

I can attest to the tire chain situation,as I fitted a pair to mine this weekend.I dont want to ever take them off now....its such a pain to put them on! I have a GM alternator (one wire) on it now with a cobbled up tensioner and it charges now at 14.5V! It still would stick out beyond the hood if it was ready to be put back on.I will probably get creative and fashion some sort of "bubble" for the hood to clear it.
Adjusted the governor and it idles right down now....around 500rpm.Even at that low level it still puts out 14.5V! I need to change the pulley to a 1/2" one (its a 3/8" now and the belt is riding high),and fabricate that tension arm,but so far its a vast improvement over an unhooked 12V pos ground generator!

I use mine for whatever it can help me with. And, it's the best value I have in a tractor.

Bought a 300 a few weeks ago, wasn't running, with some advice from this board I got her running in a little over a week.

Am hoping to put a loader on it and run a hitch mounted log splitter as well as a couple other implements. So far have only plowed snow a couple of times, but seems more than up to the task, better than the N I've been using.

I hope to get some advice about the steering system in coming weeks from those with more knowledge than myself.

Thanks

I use mine on a 9 ft haybind. Its the only tractor I have with live PTO and hydraulics. I've got a fast hitch on mine so if I have something with a 3 pt hitch I have the adaptors to use it. Mine came with a Wagner loader but I don't have power steering and the loader over the years messed up the steering. Someday I'm going to advertise the loader when there isn't too much snow or mud to get it out of where its sitting.

Hi, my dad had a 300U from 1958 to 1962, was a great tractor but could never pass the gas tank without being refilled. Traded for a B414D.

Met a 73 year old beef farmer yesterday, he still has his original 300U from 1957 and still uses on the forage blower in his pit silo.

Great tractor.

We had a Ford n series when I was growing up in the 50's. Neighbors had a 300U - what a tractor! Made the Ford look like a toy. About 10 years ago, during a bout od midlife crisis, I bought a 300U at an auction. Have done some restoration and will get it painted in the spring. I use it for bush hogging, dragging logs out of the woods, snow plowing (back blade) and any other excuse I can think of. Great stress reducer! Enjoy your tractor!

I'm in the middle of a restoration of a 300U now. I bought this tractor several years ago because it had a front end loader. It was stuck, and I'm just now getting around to doing something with it. My goal is to take it to next year's Red Power Roundup here in TN.

Mine is my main workhorse here on my little 5 acres in the western Washington forest. In this pic it was mowing a small clearing that had gotten overgrown with blackberries, salmonberries and nettles. It hadn't been mowed for about 6 years, and I estimate it was about 9 ft tall in spots. Fortunately I knew there were no large rocks and I had a good idea where the logs were, even though one snuck up on me and ripped the muffler off that day.

I have had 300u for about 12 years - went thru it, fixed everything, painted. Added a loader 2 years ago, has worked great. Much more capable than my neighbors 8n or small JD. Wish I had power steering, but I am thinking on a way to fit that on. Irv

I bought my 300U from the original owner about 30 years ago to farm my 80 acre farm. For many years it was used to plow with 3-14 IH pull plow, disk with a JD 12 ft. tandem disk and it also pulled a model 58 IH 6 row planter. I have used it for blading, loading, mowing or anything else it was need for. Since my retirement the 300U is used mostly for loader jobs. It still runs great and I hope to paint it next year. I think a 300U is a fine dependable tractor. Ken

Our first tractor was / is a 300U Dad brought it home when I was eight. I have plowed with it, planted with it, hauled tens of thousands of tons of sunshine with it, praised it , cursed it and driven it into the farm pond.... twice. It is the absolute sturdiest little tractor I have ever been on. I can't over state the fact that I HATE THE CLUTCH! after a day of hauling "berner" as my nephew calls it, I can only walk in circles. My left leg in high school was five times larger than my right which made me a lousy dancer and ended any chance I had of getting on American Bandstand.
Just like my wife, there are things I would like to change on my 300U but I love it to death and it would take more money than Donald Trump has to take either from me. All three of us have been growing old together and have many shared battle scars. Enjoy your 300U and start doing leg lifts. Add weight to the rear ( yours or the tractor's) if you are actually going to lift snow. Beware the clutch in close quarters once your leg gets tired too. I fixed a lot of fence.

I have a 350U Diesel and half onwer of two 300U's & a 330U. The 350 & 330 will be restored for show as well as used for occasional farm work, plow, disk, rake & bale hay, etc. The 300's will probably be restored and sold.
