I have fabricated a mounting bracket for a 10SI GM alternator (1 wire),I now have a problem with fabricating an adjusting lever that will meet up with the factory strap.I also fear the new alternator is going to stick out too far to the side and hit the hood (when I put that back on) without cutting a chunk out of it.Anybody else mount a GM alternator on a 300U? And if so,how did it fit? (I know the belt is going to have to be quite a bit shorter).

I've installed the Delco alternators on SH,M & 300's by using the origonal brackets. If my memory serves me, the bottom bracket has to be turned over(upside down).Bend the top adjusting bracket to fit the alt. Use a long bolt or all thread to mount alt. on bottom bracket, with a homemade bushing to take up the slack. It's a close fit ,but it'll work without cutting or bending hood.

If you want just a little more clearance, use one of the newer style GM alternators. I had to do this on my Farmall H. If you want to see how I mounted it on my H, click on PARTS & PIECES, go to Search for: and type in Ken Koch (more pictures under Ken K also) click on alternator for 1946 Farmall H.
Good Luck!
Ken

I mounted an alternator like you are talking about on my 300U and only had to put in a couple of spacers etc for longer bolt. It fits without any modification to the sheet metal. My tractor had a 12 volt generator on when I got it and I don't know what, if any, modifications may have been done to accomodate that.
