Long term covering of exhaust manifold pipe

I didn't have any proper covering for the 2" pipe that sticks out of the exhaust manifold (between the manifold and the muffler) so I used the cut off bottom of one of those plastic drink bottles. They come in many shapes - used for gatorade, designer water, etc. - but this one had about a 2.25" - 2.5" diameter. Anyhow, I'd pulled the muffler off and wanted to cover up the pipe so I stuck this plastic bottle bottom on the pipe before the exhaust pipe had cooled down all the way. The plastic shrank up to nicely seal the pipe. I had to cut it off with screwdriver. So, by accident, I arrived at this inexpensive, long-term exhaust pipe cover method.

If you're talking about LONG TERM protection, typically plastic bottles and jugs can't withstand over a year or two's UV light from the sun, and deteriorate, leaving the engine vulnerable to water, if you aren't keeping an eye on the plastic "raincap".

Good point. We'll call it medium term. I just thought it was neat one could so easily seal the pipe. I've seen enough tractors standing with a coffee can over the pipe which often blows off, leaving the engine exposed. This method would even seal off from higher moisture content in the air. Maybe a combination of this method with something over it to take the UV hit.

That's a good thing to know, thanks for the idea.

Instead of a soup can I cut the top off of an old oil filter and put over the pipe (or drink bottle). Some advantages of the oil filter are that it has a round top so will not retain water to rust out the can and it is heavier material. If you use one from a tractor engine they are long enough that they won't blow off.
