I would be greateful if you could help me with forllowing problem.

I have an IH 674. Hydraulics stopped to work. I opened the filter + removed valve and pump. The main filter was clogged with some resin subtance and small metal pieces (copper?). Also the lubricating pump mesh was partially clogged. I found also few pieces of sixe 1/2 x 1 inch below the PTO clutch.

Where does this black substance come from? What do I need to do to remove the cause of this problem. I don't just like to clean the filters and then try how it works.

Could the reason be that I have used normal hydraulic oil not the IH special one.
Could this be parts of brake disks as specially handbrake does not work very well?

I think that those pieces that you are catching in your filter and in the pump are parts of the friction material on the brake discs. I believe that on the 454, 574, and 674, the brakes are wet type brakes. This means that the discs and the friction material are submerged in oil. When the friction material gets old and worn, it breaks off and falls into the transmission and gets sucked into the filter. I know that the brakes are located inside each of the axle housings. They are not like the 06 or 66 series brakes where you can just remove them and ship them to the dealer for rebuilding. Replacing the friction discs requires removing each of the axle housings. That is my guess, but check with other people on this board to make sure, as I have never actually worked on or replaced them before.

Chadd,
thanks for your comments. I got a similar comment from another forum. Now I have the challange to understand how much time it will take to fix. Somebody also told that me that it could be the handbrake assembly. I do not have a repair manual available for reference at the moment but have ordered one so we will see how this develops. Thanks again for your help.

Hi. is your park brake work? May be the band is worn and put dirt in oil. The tractor brake disk lining don't go in the transmission when it's worn but the park band to. You have to remove the fenders, fuel tank and floor assembly, to access the hitch cover or axles. If you have a grey paste in the oil filter, it's a disk that is have to much wear.
