Fired up the A today and noticed noise while she was idleing. Only when I push in the clutch does the whinning go away. Could this be a throw out bearing? How long can I run without pulling it out? The tractor is used very lightly.

When is the last time you checked the fluid level in your transmission? There should be a pipe plug on the left side towards the front that is the level check. Also, when was the last time the fluid was changed? New 90W might make a big difference, especially in cold weather. Dave.

It is definitely not the pilot bearing. That would make noise or shutter when the clutch is depressed or when you are releasing it. It could be either gear noise on the tranny or throwout bearing. Does the noise stop when you just apply pressure to the pedal without disengaging the clutch? The tranny will still be spinning. If there is no noise then, it is the throwout bearing. They tend to get quite under a load and growl when only lightly loaded.

I just bought a Farmall A and it had a constant
noise from the clutch housing untill pressure was
put on the clutch pedal. The pilot bushing was badly worn and the vibration caused from this
had caused the clutch release sleeve guide to come
out of the housing and was riding on the driveshaft. I replaced the bushing and had to drive the sleeve back into the housing a little over an inch.

Thats a tranny noise, how cold was it? If it was very cold when you started it that could be noise caused by cold oil. Does it go away after say 15-20 minutes if so its just that the tranny is cold and hasn't got the oil on every thing yet.

If the noise goes away when you push the clutch pedal, it doesn't sound like a throwout bearing.

Sounds to me more like input shaft bearing in the transmission.
