I went to fine tune the air screw on the side of the carb and cannot get any change in engine sound.I can screw it all the way in and wont bring the engine down any rpm or make any change as far as running rough or anything.I have used carb cleaner to make sure I didnt have a external air leak, but didnt find anything. I have removed the screw completely and injected air with the air hose and it will then slow the engine down considerably. Is there something wrong with my carb?I have cleaned it very well,so I thought.

RR,

If you are talking about the idle mixture adjustment screw, it sounds to me like you have your curb idle speed set to high.

The idle circuit cannot come into play if the carb is already running over on the high side circuit.

Slowing down the curb idle speed 'forces' the carb to pull from that idle circuit and the mixture screw will then have an effect.

Hope this helps,

Allan

Allen, I am idleing around 700rpm,so what you are saying is that I have my idle set too high, for the idle circuit to work. Its running off the higher end circuit?I took it apart today to lower the float anyway and I cleaned those holes real good. There are three total in that circuit.I'll try lowering the idle and try it again. THanks. Kristin

Im battling that right now on my 460,, Itr was running so smooth at idle,, and had adjustment on the screw,,, Now,, nothing, and its running erraticly. thats even after rebuilding it. yes,, it does sound like you idle circuit is plugged up some where,, upon removal of the fuel bow and the venturi, from the throttle body,, in side the throat of the throttle body,, youll see a small hole in the side of the throat,, it actually has a small brass jet in there, this is the idle jet. if it is dirty, it plugs up, and will run off the main jet for the idle,, runs too rich,, check that little area, and try adjusting again, you can use a thin piece of wire, or compressed air to blow out all the passages in the bowl, and the throttle body.
