I've always been an Oliver and White guy, but I now find myself the new owner of an '84 5288. Tractor has 4400 hours on it. I'd appreciate any guidance and info you can spare to get me up to speed on these tractors. I have read that it has the famed IH 466 engine. This one has oil blowby coming out the crankcase ventilator when running. Could this mean that it needs rings via an overhaul already? It carries good oil pressure. Powershift works well, but steering seems like it takes more effort than a Deere or White, and if you try turning the wheel too fast, the power steering jerks and won't keep up. Is there an adjustment to this circuit, or is that a sign of a weak hydraulic pump? What about rear end and trans? Things to check? Thanks for any help and regards.

Seeing as this is a new tractor to you I would put some hours on it to check oil consumption. You need to do some heavy work to get a good reading. Running poorly sounds like the injector pump and injectors might need some work. We have had several of these 88 series tractors and have had good luck with them.

Typically these tractors normally have allot of blowby. As long as there isnt any oil dripping out of the blow by tube its probably OK for a while. Have done an inframe overhaul on a 5488 which reduced the blowby but still has more tha most engines do. As far as the power steering, the hand pump is getting weak. Possibly needs a kit or replaced. Rear end and trans.are one of these tractors strong points and usually give little to no trouble. Very good series of tractors. The 5488 weve had has been a good tractor and we know several people with the 5288 who are verypleased with them.If you have any more questions just email me.

Just don't get a 2WD one anywhere near a mud hole. We test drove a 5088 once. Dad was out spreading manure with it, and drove through a known wet spot that our 1066 (also 2WD) walked through no problem the day before (we had no rain in the 24 hours, but it didn't dry much either). The 5088 went in up to the axles. We had to unhook the spreader, and it still took both the 1066 and 856 to pull it out. Backed in with the 1066 and drove out with the spreader... Suffice it to say, the 5088 sat out behind the shed until the dealer came back for it.

I thought the 1066 was heavy...

Thanks; it seems like a very comfortable tractor to operate. I'll have to look into the steering valve. As far as blowby, there is a puddle of oil that drips from the blowby tube when the tractor is running; I could see how it could lose a couple quarts if worked all day. Speaking of overhauls, which I've done on Olivers and Whites, how are they done on these tractors? Do you have to pull the motor to remove the crankshaft, or can the block remain in place to do the job? At this point, I've almost reserved myself to giving this tractor an overhaul, because it seems to smoke excessively and it even shot fire out of the exhaust stack before it got good and warm, and even then it seems to run rough and misfire at mid and high rpms. At idle it runs like a Swiss watch.

An inframe overhaul consists of pistons and liners and rod bearings. To do anything to the crank and cam would be an out of frame and requires splitting the tractor and removing the engine. I also had the head reworked when I did my inframe. I would suggest doing that to yours given the info about the rough running and possible misfire. New injectors are a must at this time.
