Ok the ongoing story, I am shaking right now I am so mad. I have spent the whole day screwing with this tractor and no luck. Ok I rebuilt the Dist. the carb and the starter motor. I have installed all new wires, battery, ignition switch, volt meter, plugs + wires, and then all new wiring all around. I have a 12 volt system, and the 12 volt regulator, not an alternator. Ok, the power is getting to the starter motor and it is turning real strong. However I am not getting any spark at all. I put the #1 plug in the plug wire and hit the starter. I don't see any spark or arching between the gap in the plug? SHouldn't I be able to see this? Also while hitting the starter it is obviously turning the Dist., and I have noticed that the Dist. cap is wiggling around, but not that much, would this effect anything with distributing power to the plugs? I am really frustrated now. I really need help. I am a man, but I am near tears with this thing since nothing I have tried is working. Please help, any ideas?

Hey guys thanks for the replies. All the wires are new, and I rerouted a couple of them because I had them in the previous position, but those were wrong. Anyway on to the Dist.. My 48 model H has a horizontal Dist., however this 44 H has a vertical Dist., I don't know if this matters, but in regards to it wobbling, the cap is kinda moving as the gears are spinning the Dist.. The notch is lined up on the cap to the base, and the rotor button seems to be ok. I am still getting power to the starter motor real good, but nothing elese is seeming to get power.

Yeah, go relax and have a beer. Walk away from it and tackle it again tomorrow. It's amazing the great advice you get here when you ask. Remember, working on a Farmall is a journey, not a destination. Good luck! :-)

I had no spark at the points on mine once, found out the condenser wire was touching the side of the distributer and was shorting out. I bet that is your problem.

Is your rotor and cap compatible? If your rotor isnt "contacting" the terminals inside the cap you wont get any spark to the plugs.Make sure they go together. You didnt by chance have a 6V coil by mistake and popped it feeding it 12 volts?

The distributor cap can only go on one way properly. Make sure the notch in the cap lip is lined up with the distributor. If it's 180 degrees out of position, it won't be seated and wobble.

Starighten out the cap first, while thats off, turn the switch on.Make sure the pionts are closed and slightly pry them open touching only the longer peice with a screwdriver and see if the spark when they break. If no fire there then the coil, condensor,or something to there is not right.

Had no spark on IHC 303 combine- turned out wire going to points had rubbed a bit were it went into distributer, rubber tubing also wore, rust completed short. Cleaned, taped wire, engine started. Something to check. RN

yup, stand back tanner, go have a cup of coffee or something. Like gene said the distributor should NOT be moving. something is wrong in there. Then when you get that fixed make sure you have fire to the coil. I just jump to the block with my plier handle. If you have juice there then open and shut the points with a screwdriver. every time they break you should get a nice blue spark from the coil wire. You can check all this by simply turning on your ignition switch, never even have to crank the motor.

Take two deep breaths and have a cold beverage.

1) Distributor cap shouldn't be wiggling - It's probably not locked down properly - any way this problem must be solved.

2) My guess. You have no voltage going to the coil then distributor or you have a short in the distributor. Remove the wire going from the coil to the distributor - ignition on, check for voltage. No voltage trace back until you find the problem.

Voltage at the coil. Set the meter on OHMs and check the terminal at the distributor - you are looking for a short.

Good luck

Tanner, put your plug about 1 or 2 mm. from the block or a bare spot on the frame and you should see a hot blue spark jump the gap. If not then pull the coil wire from the cap and check for spark there in the same way. Don't get bit! As far as the cap moveing this does not sound right to me. Not sure what is going on there. It will take someone smarter than me to help with that.

I know how you feelnothing better than an old farmall to make a grown man CRY. Ok #1 your plug has to be grounded to see spark. #2 what do you have for a balast resistor? Maybe its broke. # 3 do you have power going to the dist from the coil wire that hooks to the nut on the coil? #4 do you have the wires hooked up right on the coil +- to the dist? #5 Something doesnt sound right with the dist cap it should not wiggle unless something is wrong Do you have the right parts on there do you have the rotor ingaged all the way on the shaft it sits on? Take the cap off and turn it over and make sure the rotor is turning good when you spin her. Let me know. You can call me if you want I will uncover my email above and you can email me for my # JON
