Hey Guys.
Finnaly putting my 300 back together.
When putting the dist back on how do you get it so that its set up right?
I would assume you TDC cylinder #1, but then what?
Help me out on this.

Kelly, the way I do it is I take the #1 plug out and put my finger over the hole and have someone bump the starter. When the compression pushes your finger out you know you are comming up on the compression stroke for #1. Then line the crank pulley up on TDC and position your point to just open for #1 on the distributor. This will get you close.
Good Luck!

If the cranking pin in the front of the crankshaft is straight across then you are real close to TDC on either 1 or four. stick a piece of bailing wire in number 1 if the piston isn't right there turn engine one half turn. use wire to find tdc. Kinda a crude method but that's what dad taught in the late 40.s

set it so the points are just starting to open at TDC pointer on rotor looking toward #1 plug wire. I'm sure you know that. Start the tractor; with engine running at a nice easy idle rotate distributor until it runs easiest, the turn it clockwise till it just starts to labor. You should be good to go. When you pull the trottle open motor should pick up quicly. If motor trys to kick back when starting you've got it a tad fast.

Hi Kelly, The way I understand it is TDC compression stroke ,Check the pointer on the front to see if its in line with the pully then put the distributor so its just starting to go on #1 plug on the dist cap then install distributor gear so it lines up with mount then mesh it with the distributor and put her on then time it. Remember #1 is TDC TWICE once compression once on exhaust. My 300 distributer is installed 180 degrees off so I have the wires arranged to compensate - better do it right. Some day those reversed wires will cause me grief because I'll forget. ***t, it'll probably happen today! Dick Davis
