300 Utility, wide front end, extreme freeplay at the steering wheel....1/2 turn before movement. No play in steering arms,or splines, its all in the box.Is this adjustable thru the 2 pre-load screws? I read somewhere that upper steering shafts were being repro'd.If so,where online could one find them?

Guys, anybody know whether any of this diagnosis & possible fixes is also applicable to the 240U steering box? It sounds like you are talking about my 240U with power steering. Loose as a ruptured GOOSE.....

Paul.. There is a machine shop in Kentucky that builds up and turns the shaft and gears back to orginal size to remove the lost movement. Dose it very reasonable. Its alot cheaper then new and beats used that is also worn.

I replaced my power steering box with a new one, and sold the old one to a friend. He tore it down to rebuild it, and found a nub on the end of one of the shafts (not sure which one) that was badly worn, causing the play you describe. He build it up with weld and machined it smooth. Problem fixed, cheap. What WASN'T cheap was the new seals and gaskets required to put it back together so it wouldn't leak. Good luck!

Paul, there's three different adjustments on the 300u box. Two of them adj. the free travel of the shafts that steering arms attach to. The other adjusts the mesh of the gears on those same two shafts. If they're not extremely worn, most of the play can be eliminated. Get an I/T manual, it explains the procedure better than I can. Good Luck!

I hope the price has came down if they are reproducing those upper shafts. I had to go to Case/IH to get one for my 350U...$300+! Tried every other method I could think of to find one elsewhere without any success. I think I still have the old one, that I could sell real cheap...just needs a trip to the dentist to fix a tooth! ☺☺☺

You can't adjust that much out of 'em. I'm guessing that your steering wheel shaft is moving up and down in the gearbox. Is this power steering?

Power steering. The wheel itself doesnt move up/down.Once it takes hold it will turn the wheels when stationary,so its good under load.
