Water Jacket Flush advice on '47 H

Pulling the block drain plug revealed a buildup of scale and sludge which I'd like to flush out before using my tank heater. The engine and tractor overall have been in good shape - I've been able to loosten any bolt or nut I wanted to without breaking it.

I've never flushed a water jacket so I'm wondering how to do it. Does one remove both the plate behind the carb and the plate behind the distributor (after removing both those units first)? I think the radiator is pretty clear (looks so from the top) so I'm thinking I can just flush out the areas around the cylinders with this attack. Are the bolts prone to be problematic or do they usually come out easily? I'm planning on fabricating the replacement gaskets unless someone tells me that's not a good idea in this case.

I'm trying to get an overview of the job in an effort to get it done tomorrow. In a couple of days we'll be catching up with you plains folks - getting our due of freezing temperatures. I'd just as soon get this task done in my unheated barn before then.

I did mine this summer. Buy a new water IH jacket and gasket. I thought mine would be ok and was hoping to send the waterjacket back but sure enough, it was rusted. My H is in good shape, always garaged and not really used hard in 30 years. We also put a little thread sealer on all of the bolts. The covers on the distributor side are for oil.

I would get a new cover and gasket before I started. Iv'e seen to many of these after cleaning them leak.They are very hard to braze as metal thickness is thin. Remember these old tractors were drained every night in freezing temps then refilled in the morning after the tractor started with well water. Anti freeze was too expensive and alcohol would boil out. Was that way on our farm anyway

unless your tractor is overheating I wouldn't get too radical. Just buy a comercial fast flush and use lots of water. I wouldn't take the cover off unless it is leaking. Just my thoughs but the old saying is "Let a sleeping dog lie"

Except that the covers are fairly cheap, and there is a 99% chance that the old one is not working properly because it has disintegreted on the inside.

Right or wrong, I used muratic acid, let it set awhile then attempted to neutralize the acid with baking soda. Flushed out with water. This is with the radiator off, of course. Then I removed the plate on the left side, the right one exposes the push rods, not the cylinders. Then I flushed with a pressure washer. Got most of the crud, impossible to get all of it. The head I then had hot tanked at the same time the valves were done. I am leary about using acid inside an engine, as acid cannot be flushed out, it must be neutralized. Don't think I caused a problem. Case-IH has a cooling system flush that is alkaline. I don't see how that would do much good, as most water deposits are basic, not acidic, but they know more than I do.
