I just rebuilt my Dist. and set the points to .025, this is the correct gapping, right? Anyway, I wanted to know if the gear area where the Dist. mounts into the larger gear should be completely packed with grease or just lightly packed with grease? When i took it apart it was completely full however the grease was broken down into a watery sludge. Let me know, thanks.

Tanner: Just to add to what Bob has said as I agree on the amount. I was advised by an IH technician years ago to use white automotive grease, much better for those small gears, and gives better lubrication in all seasons. I buy it in squeeze tubes, very easy to put in by just removing plugs on side of dostributor drive. I've been using that close to 40 years. The manual will give good advice on how often and how much.

Tanner – I’m not certain what the proper quantity of grease is “correct”. My practice is to pack in a sufficient quantity so the gears run in grease, but to NOT so the gearbox is packed solid. Reason: By leaving some air space in the gearbox for expansion, grease won’t get forced into the distributor as the engine heats up.
