What was done to the 1456 engine to get more horsepower?

I have some literature somewhere that says the 1456 had 200 more RPM's over the 1256, raising the governed rate from 2400 to 2600 to raise horsepower to compete with some Deere tractor. Basically the Deere had a little bit over the 1256, so they bumped the 12 up a bit to compete. We have a 14, and boy oh boy do I love that thing.

I don't know how much power you want, but there were guys that had them running pretty hot with the stock engine. We just looked at a 1456 that was around 180, and our neighbor has a 1206 running 195. There are a lot of guys that talk about 1456's over 200. Our neighbor has never had any trouble with his 12 and it is a beautiful tractor. If you want more power, pull the pump and have them turn it up and give it heck. If you check the oil and change it on schedule like any other engine, the 407 is a tank, bullet-proof as someone on here described it.

The 1456 has a bigger wrist pin diameter and also uses a 4 roller injection pump instead of a 2 roller pump in the 1256.

could you use the pump off of a 1466 or 1486 to get more power?

No. They are completely different engines. The pumps aren't interchangeable.

It might be able to be done,(if there is a will, there is a way. . .) but it would probably require an adaptor plate and new tubing and stuff to fit. It might even require different timing. Also, the 66 series tractors all used the 400 series engines (414, 436?, 466)where as the bigger 56 series diesels were the 407. The 407 has the pump mounted on the opposite side of the engine, so the pump could run in the opposite direction. If you still have the stock pump on it, you should be able to have the pump cranked up to get a little more smoke. Also, the 1456 has 10 to 13 psi of boost into the intake from the turbo where as the turbo on the 1256 only has 8 to 11 psi. Our 806 with the IH RD pump was cranked from 89 to 105 horsepower and our 966 with the American Bosch pump was cranked up to 110 from 100. However, just don't overstress the drive system. The 1456's rear end holds 5 more gallons of fluid than the 1256. My guess is that they strengthened something to handle the added power. Whatever you decide to do, good luck.
