3 point log splitter-will it work on my '58 460?

I was thinking about getting a 3 point log splitter from Northern Hydralics. Have any of you had any experience with this? The tractor has 6000+ hours and the hydralics seem to still work good, but I haven"t checked any pressures. I was wondering if this splitter will work reasonably well with the tractor at about 1200 rpm or so. Thanks for your help.

You will probely not be satisified with the 3-point wood spliter on the 460 not enough hyd pressure on these tractors been there and done that. You can run a PTO pump on the 460 and set pressure to 2500psi, but you have to have another control valve and a resivour

The most important thing is what is the dia of the piston as that is where the power comes from then psi of your pump then gpm. As the speed will come from the gpm.

I bought a home built splitter years ago. I ran it with my farmall 300. I added a valve to it then just plugged the hoses into the tractor's outlets. Tied the hydraulic lever on the console and then just sat down on a block of wood and commenced splitting. I ran it this way for a couple of years until the torque amplifier seized up one fall and the tractor sat in the shop. I worked on it in my spare time as I still had my 'H' to run the spreader over the winter. I then took a hydraulic unit that was given to me and hooked it up to the back of my Bolens garden tractor and ran the pump off the pto. I now have an 8 hp. Briggs running the splitter.

Should work OK. The splitters I've seen have said on their tags that 8 GPM is ideal. Don't remember the pressure recommendation.

I think a 460 is set for around 1500 PSI, and the smaller of the two pumps you could get with a 460 is 12 GPM (I assume this is at 1800 rated RPM.) AT 1200 RPM this'll get you 8 GPM. At 1500 PSI on a typical 4" bore splitter cylinder, this will yield about 9.5 tons of splitting force.

I will add that I have no experience around hydraulic log splitters, so I don't know if 9.5 tons is adequate for tough wood.

I ran a home made one with a 560, 400, 706, and now a Oliver 1850..... ..... The Oliver works the best, then the 706, then 560. If I was you I wouldn"t waste my time buying a factory one. The ones I seen aren"t nearly heavy enough and the cylinders are too small for anything besides pine. A 3.5 or 4" dia. cylinder works pretty good, the stroke is a tad slow, but will split anything other than a chunk of 1018 steel.

The one I got is only 3" and it isn"t big enough for the IH"s, but the Oliver runs it good. We had stuff my buddies store bought job(With an engine) wouldn"t even put a dent in(Serious!) and ours went right through it.

I"d never buy one with an engine, most of the time you have to run them at HIGH rpms for them to do anything..... ..... .With a big tractor 3pt job the tractor is just above idle and is nice and quiet. You can also lower the splitter to the ground with the 3pt to roll on heavy pieces..... ..... Then pick it up to split them.
