Greetings all!,
I just got the clutch yanked out of my 240U, and was cleaning the flywheel up and noticed that my unit does not have a pilot bearing, but a bronze bushing. Now I know I have to replace everything else in there but Do I have to replace the bushing Too? and if It's a Yes,How in the Hell do you get it out????It Looks to be in good shape but I would'nt know what to look for..The Clutch didn't wear out, it self destructed when one of the pressure plate bolts rattled loose. All of the plate fingers broke off.I Bought it that way. Any Thoughts? Thanks In advance

Hey John...you've been BUSY on that beast! What's weird is my initial 240U hard shift problems have substantially improved over the past couple of months. Seems like once I fixed that axle seal, mucked out and refilled the tranny with clean hy-tran, messed (both directions) with the clevis and actually started pulling some logs and scooping with the loader, I started to get some quiet shifts maybe 30% of the time and the other 70% were no longer sounding quite like sitting over a rock crusher. I have absolutely no explanation but it's true!

But when my clutch goes, that's the end of it because I can't even imagine doing a split and really tearing into the clutch like you! Hats off to ya and best of luck. Dave

John's first method works well but using wet paper rather than grease is less messy. wmw

Brass pilot bushings are fairly common on the older small Ih rigs. Two succesful methods for removal.
1- fill back of hole with grease and get a bolt thet is a vey close fit in the bushing. Hit the bolt with a hammer and the pressure will push the bushing out/
2- Screw a tap into the bushing, and when it bottoms keep turning. It will pull the bushing.

Well, I've tried 2 out of three ideas and the Bushing remains!!!I'm starting to get pissed.Went out and rented a actual pilot bushing puller and all it did was rip the edges off of the backside. I really didnt want to tear up the old bushing so I could size up a new one but it's mocking me now...More Beer is required now.
