We were at a guys place who my dad works with, he's got about 30 farmalls, he just restored a 350, Its got a Ih w\f, and 15.5's on the back. It is an all around SWEET tractor. Dad is thinkin of getting it, I heard from some one today that the 350's and 450's are junk cause you always have to fix them. I know nothing about the Hundred series tractors, never owned one, so i just want to know if these tractors are junk or good. I think any old tractor is good, If you treat it like crap and beet the you know what out of it than it could be junk.

To refer to the 300 or 350 as junk, one would also have to include the H from which the 300 and 350 was derived. The H was one of the most dependable and serviceable tractors ever built by anyone. As Cowman states below, the 350 is simply a super H with a new set of clothes with one exception. The T.A. (Torque Amplifier) was added to the 300 and 350 which did not appear on the H or sSuper H. While there were eventually some breakdowns in the T.A. system, mainly due to misunderstanding of how to use it or from misuse, they werent constant or chronic problems. Considering that these tractors are nearing 50 years in age, it is not unreasonable to expect that the T.A. may need reconditioned along with any other updating that may be required of a tractor that old. If I were looking for one of the early numbered series Farmalls, I would never let a blown T.A. from preventing me from owning one as it is not that difficult to fix. I would simply consider that in the price I was willing to pay. In my opinion, someone who labels the 300 or 350 as junk, is not fairly assessing the tractor, which is not to say that there isnt a junk one among them, but if it is junk, it has been made that way by its owner or owners, not because it was a designing failure.

Personal opinion here, but if someone tells you a certian type of tractor(or anything) that was built in high numbers is "junk", that person is most likely wanting to sneak in there and buy the tractor(or whatever) for themselves. Get several opinions(like you're doing here!).

My experience has been with an M and a Super C. They were both great tractors and I have no reason to think a 350 would be any different.

Also,I think that a 350 is the best looking tractor ever made. (by any manufacturer)

Tell your Dad to get it.
I'm restoring one myself right now.

Mitch: In my lifetime I've owned 16 Farmalls ranging in size from Super A to a 1066. In that group was at least one tractor from every series; letter to 66. 350 was part of that evolution. I never had one, but did have a 300, still going and it probably has 25,000 hours on it by now. I know it is on it's 6th set of pistons and sleeves. Of my 16 tractors the only one I can honestly say didn't measure up was Farmall 504 gas. Why IH ever changed and went to non sleeved gas engines, is one I will scratch my head over until I die.

I think IH thought by the early 1960's gas tractors were over in the 30+ hp sizes, thus they didn't spend a lot on R&D. I really can't understand that one myself either, I certainly wouldn't have purchased a new gasser by then. My 504 came with a farm I bought. That would be my thinking on Farmalls, after the 350 and 450 go diesel.

Hi Hugh,

I agree. At about the 50 horsepower level, the darned fuel economy thing starts voicing it's opinion very loudly.

I just turned down a 766 gasser with 3900 hours. Don't think I could afford to fuel it to come the 10 miles out here in the country.

At heart I am a Green lover, but what is right is right! The 350 is a great tractor. My dad bought one new and I have the privelege to own it now and can tell you it is a great all around tractor to have. Yea, figgure on redoin the TA every 10 years if you use it a lot but if you aren't on it all the time it will last as long as a regular clutch. If you don't use it, it won't wear out so the choice is yours only. The 2 point is really great if you get some implements to use with it. If International hadn't been so greedy back then every mfg may of had that. Every tractor can find a guy somewhere who will knock it, be careful of who you listen to if you want the truth.

FC,

I know this sounds like an oversimplification, but there just is no such thing as a "junk Farmall".

They are mechanical and being such, things will break from time to time, but the Farmalls are tough old tractors!

I have, I would guess, thousands of hours on a 300U (Same tractor fifferent paint wide front). Dad got it when I was 8 and I am almost 43 now. For almost 20 years it was our primary farm tractor. As a jr. high kid I was embarassed to farm next to our Stieger loving neighbors. Later, I figured out our 300 was paid for. Plowed - planted with it and hauled tons of sunshine too. I put mains in it "just because" about 25 years ago. I still use it as a chore tractor. I complain about the clutch but no real money has ever been spent on repairs.

All brands of the older tractors had their place, I would never call anyone's tractor junk. As NE Cowman said, the 00 and 50 series were updates of the H/M series, which was produced since 1939. No other tractor was produced in greater numbers than the H during that time period.

While the hundred series may not have had the raw guts and glory of the letter series, they brought a lot of changes to the industry that was rapidly moving towards comfort and efficiency for the owner. Some of the tractors were a bit underpowered, but they stayed on the job till it was finished as long as you had the gas barrel close by. The diesel motors developed pretty good power considering the increase compression ratios they used at that time. The transmission and rear end were plenty strong, the low side torque amplifier was a problem and still is suspect at best, mostly because they are misused and not kept properly adjusted. The hydraulics were fine ;the fast hitch''''well we won't go there. If you have a chance to capture a part of that I.H. era do it!!! Migraine

I had a 300. It turned out to need more work then I thought it would. It had been not taken care of properly. I did the engine, clutch and TA. Still needed brake, hydraulics and work in the steering. Otherwise it worked fine for what I used it for. Bought it from a fellow I was aquainted with.
