Coax and Deano -- found the filler plug cleverly camouflaged exactly where you said it would be and by golly this 240 Utility has power steering! Totally dead power steering that the seller didn't know the tractor had, but it's there. Which explained the difficult steering and the periodic whine from the front.

Added about 3 qts of fluid and 2 things happened:

1. the steering started to work again!
2. it began leaking from the base of what I now recognize as the p/s pump pretty good. So I am adding it to my 2005 project list.

Thanks for the advice!

Dave

my p/s pump leaked around the top seal..turned out to be o rings needed to be replaced..(dryed out from sitting) my father in law gave me my 240 and he had it for 10 years and never knew it had power steering: he told me if i ever got it running to beware it steers terrible...well it took me a couple months, and a lot of help from this site to figure out it too had power steering...now i've got it running decent, and use the tractor a lot...not bad for a tractor that pretty much sat in the weeds since roughly early 70's....ih must have made the motor bulletproof back then...

Well, I guess I am running in the same league with your father in law. Stick a fish in my ear and call me stupid but I did not 'connect the dots' on the p/s situation on this beast until you guys started cluing me in. You dad in law spoke truly -- they steer like a brontosaurus using the 'Armstrong' method...

Deano, my p/s pump leaks appeared to be happening along the base of the pump right where it sits on the drive shaft alley. Looking closely, I could see where some previous owner had tried to gunk it up with silicon. I think pulling/rebuilding that pump is going to be a chore and a half. Have to wait for warmer weather around here. Summer project for sure.

Have you tried to replace the points in your dist yet, working through the Superior loader frame? Because of the frame tubes, I can't see in there well enuf to get a little wrench on the condenser lead, etc. Somebody said just pull the whole dist out, but I am king of leery about putting it back one tooth off and totally hosing the timing.

pulling the pump off wasn't that bad once i was able to gently pull steering wheel off...that is the worst part if i remember....as far as the points i'll take a look at mine...i've done most of the engine type work while the loader was off:

I can't imagine pulling my Superior loader off. Looks like way too much work involved. The dang thing looks like a bird cage around the engine and the grill. Or maybe Fort Knox.

Yeah, but would you really be happy with a Kubota where everything worked perfect all the time? Instead we get to keep a little piece of U.S. industrial history alive a while longer, before it all moves to China and Korea. Ever ask yourself how long will it be before General Dynamics starts making tanks and Bradleys in China instead of Ohio?

You and I both know that the Navy back in the '80s started doing refits on carriers like the Midway in Japan rather than in U.S. ports. (Uh oh...wandered off subject. I shouldn't have had that second beer.)
