I want to convert a 1964 Model Farmall 140 to a 12 volt negative ground electrical system. It currently has a 6 volt positive ground system.I also would like to convert to an electronic ignition. What needs to be replaced ?

What does the letter "J "represent on the serial number plate?

During the years of manufacture of the 140, it went from 6 volt generator, 12 volt generator, to 12 volt alternator. Mounting the alternator is not especially difficult on the the 140, but I have seen some conversions with poor pulley alignment and wobbly alternators. I priced the alternator mount for the 140 at the dealer. At that time it was $114.00!! Unreal!!

If you go to the articles section Bob M has an excellent diagram of the conversion on an M but should be the same for yours. If you are going to do it I would use an alternator.

Well you need to get the gen. set up for 12 volt or install and alternator. Also will need to install a resistor in the wire going to the coil. Switch the amp guage wires around and other then that you should be set. If it was me I'd put a delco one wire alternator one it.
