Hi all. I'm new to the Farmall scene, and I was hoping you might help me adjust the carb on a '51 M. The attached picture shows the carb along with its various screws and slots (which I've color coded).

To be honest, I don't know where to begin with this carb. Our 8N only has two screws -- the main jet and the idle. This carb seems to have a couple extra things. And now that I've fiddled with it, it runs worse than before. :( Is there a baseline setting for these adjustments? On the 8N, for instance, I close them all the way then adjust out 1.5 turns.

Any hints you could pass along would be much appreciated. I'm hoping to get a manual for Christmas, but until then....

Ok.heres a loose copy of what Mr.TW Cook put on another site in 1999 and I have it still hanging on the shop wall. Its has always worked for me.It goes as follows:

Close the idle adjusting screw(just below the governor connection)to its seat, then open one turn.Run at fast idle without load until warm.Close throttle by pushing control lever all the way forward.back out the throttle stop screw a little at a time until desired idle speed is acheived.speed up the engine then recheck the idle adjustment.

To adjust the main fuel(on the bottom),advance the speed control to fast idle position (pull rearward to advance),and turn the main fuel adjustment clockwise until the the fuel flow is shot off and the speed of the engine drops because of the lean mixture; then open until the engine runs smoothly.after the engine has been at full load, readjust as necessary.always adjust so that the engine operates smoothly with as lean a mixture as possible.

If the engine is not receiving the correct mixture of fuel,it is possible that the main jet adjusting screw has loosened. If necessary, tighten the adjustment screw packing nut securely.

I hope Mr.Cook doesn't mind me passing this along. The credit is all his and if he sees this, THANK YOU from me as this saved my butt more times than I can count..good luck

Not that different from your 8N. Open the main fuel screw 1.5-3 turns open. that's the one coming out of the bowl--looks like you have a green circle. Adjust the idle mixture 1-1.5 turns open --yellow. The red one is the idle speed-it just adjusts the throttle butterfly in the throttle body to the correct idle speed. With engine warm, and at WOT turn the main jet in until it runs rough and back it out (plus maybe 1/4-1/2 turn) until smooth. Out is rich, in is lean. With the throttle closed and the tractor at idle, turn the idle mixture in or out until smooth. IN is RICH, out is lean, the opposite of the main mixture. You may have to set both a couple of times. If you can't get it adjusted right, dissasemble, soak in carb cleaner, blow out with compressed air, and put a kit in it. The thingy at the bottom is a "metering nozzle clamp nut". Leave it alone if you don't have one in the kit, I'd probably leave it alone, anyway. The carb is very easy to overhaul.
