My personal favorite is a 1953 Super C. I grew up on it, I restored it, and now I am going to take it to shows and parades. What's you favorite?

Does a 1086 count as a Farmall? Seeing as how Farmall was the name for IH row-crops, I'll say it does and call the 1086 my favorite Farmall. They finally got a decent cab, and although the rest of the tractor wasn't much advanced from the 1066, the cab made up for it. The position of some of the controls leaves a lot to be desired, but they're still a pretty decent cab. Good engines and a good stout drivetrain for the most part. Nothing against the "M", because an "M" Farmall was the first tractor I ever drove, they sold a bunch of them and they were good, but I don't think it was the best tractor of it's day. Certainly one of the most popular and good in a lot of categories, but not the best in any. For instance, Deeres had better hyraulics at the time and in later years of the "M" production had a better operator's station when the battery-box seat came out. That's one area where IH should have done some work long before they did - their seats. A lot of the other makers were installing backrests and armrests and IH still had the old coil-spring pan sitting there. My list of favorite Farmalls would have to go 1086, M, H, and then possibly the 766.

I grew up on a B, Super A, H, and F20 later a M, then 230's, 400D, 460D, Super M, 330 U, 706D, and 756D. I was around a Super C, 504U, 574U and row crop, 684D a lot. As Hugh said for all around use I will have to go with the 756D. It is just a little more confortable than the 706, because of the shift and direction the clutch and brake peddles travel. Also the rubber handles on shift over steel.

I guess there are two. One is a 1947 M that i learned to drive at age 7, and the other is a 1944 H that my dad bought 6 days after I was born. I have the H as it was passed to me. It was my dad's first tractor and he said always it would be mine. I intend to pass it on to my grandson.

JBlavl: I have owned 16 Farmalls in my lifetime, sized from a Super A to a 1066. Of the 16 at least one came from each series starting with letter series right through to 66 series. To me nothing matches the letter and Super letter series styling. From that point of view they are still number one, to me.

From a styling and practical point of view 56 series has to be number one. I have spent many a long day on H, SM, 300 and 560. The 56 series were just everything those oldies were only with comfort. When I first got my 656, I couldn't believe what pleasure it was to be able to change position in that seat. The nice open and unobstructed platform, you could turn crossways, cross your legs if wanted. Yes the old SM was a good tractor, but doesn't hold a candle to the 656. 656 with a wide front would out manuver a SM with narrow front. 656 was just and M with more power and comfort. I dare not leave out the power item, last time I did that you guys near crucified me.

From M to 656 all they did was add 2 cylinders, IPTO, TA, power steering, draft controlled hitch, and for the first time in history add a comfortable operator platform. I once planted corn with 656, around 49 hours non stop with exception of meals. Guy who brough my meals took planter for one fill up of fert while I ate and had a cat nap in pickup. That was 7 times about 1 hour each. I don't think you could do that on an M, I know I couldn't. 56 series tractors are now close to 40 years old and will still hang in there comercially, just a decendant of the M.

As a young kid I grew up on a Farmall "M". Since then I have owned or had interest in a "Cub". Super "C", "H", "300", "M", Super "M", Super "MTA", and "460". My vote goes for a Super "MTA".

It's not actually a Farmall but my Favorite IH is our 5488, to me it represent's IH's return to the #1 spot in that tractor market and at it's introduction it was a step ahead of anything else on the market.

I'm not trying to start a war, but as a Deere fan and technician that grew up on and around IH tractors (66s and 86s primarily), The 88-series still wasn't up to par with a lot of other tractors available at the time. IH still didn't have a full powershift transmission, while Deere had offered three transmission options on some of the 30-series tractors and was offering two trans options in the 4640. Deere then came out with a 15-speed full powershift in the 50-series. The 4840 and 4850 came with the powershift standard. Opinions vary greatly on the shifting quality of the Deere powershifts, particularly the 8-speeds, but the fact is that they are very strong transmissions and hold up well. Had the 88-series been introduced in the later 70s it would have been pretty modern, but in the early 80s didn't offer anything that the other makers didn't have. The blow-through fan arrangement on the 88s was also not the best idea, serviceability-wise. I replaced the cam and piston and sleeve in a buddy's 5288 last year and getting that front end assembly on and off was the biggest hassle of the whole deal, along with having to remove the entire front axle assembly to get the front cover off. I'm replacing the cam and doing an overhaul on a 4650 right now and had the cam out and replaced in less time than it took to get the front cover off on the 5288. If you want to see a couple of tractors that really rewrote the books and were quantum leaps ahead of the competition, as a Deere guy I would refer you to the 4010 and the 8000-series. Particuarly the 8000-series, as every feature that Case-IH criticized about them at their introduction somehow magically appeared on the Magnum MX tractors. I also don't believe that the 88s put IH in the #1 spot as far as sales go. My personal opinion is that the 88s were a beefed up and reworked version of the 86s, much as the 86s had been of the 66s. I don't think IH had the capital to develop a brand-new from the ground up new tractor, or they likely would have done so. Still and all, the 88s were and are pretty good tractors and your's is a darn nice looking machine.

My one and only Farmall M dad bought in 1949 brand new. In my opinion, the Farmall M/H was the high point in IH's history. The M was one of the best back in its day. If something bad happens and we have to sell off the antiques and farm, the one tractor that we would keep is the M.

JB,

My favorite is the one I'm sittin' on at any particular time. And and to be honest about it, the old geizer doesn't have to be red either. I just like old tractors.

Bet I'd even like the new ones too, but I wont' ever spend that kind of money to find out 'cause I think it is a little silly to spend those kinds of funds on a tractor; the old ones will do the job just fine and last for years. 'Course, I'm not farmin' to make a livin' either.

I’m gonna say the B.

This was a real head-scratcher for me. Seems to me the first tractor I drove was a 1950 M, then an F-12, and then a 1940 B. I wanted to drive the B first, but my legs weren’t long enough to operate the clutch on the B, but I could manage it on the M. We used that B for just about everything, small grain seeding, mowing, raking, swathing, hauling grain, running the elevator, and probably a few things I can’t remember. The thing I liked best about that little B was the visibility for mowing and raking that no other Farmall had, plus you can turn them around on a dime and leave 9 cents change! Ya gotta love the way those B's could get around :>)

I have owned one of each of the letter series family (not the supers except super a), and although the M was a great tractor, there is something special about the H to me. It is that "just right" size. Kind of an overachiever..
Also like the B alot....for no particular reason except it is just not as common around these parts.

My favorite is the Farmall M sitting in my garage.

This tractor belonged to my grandfather, father and now is mine. I am trying to get her just as new as the day she came off the showroom floor.

When I was a little boy, I came up missing. Finally someone looked out in the field and saw me sitting on the tractor pretending I was driving. Friend of mine got her running and I plan to put the red paint on and then post pictures.
