Hi Ya'll,

Was just readin' about the fella who has the bad head/head gasket on his 560 and got to thinking (strange as that may sound). :>)

IH must have made some changes to this engine/head somewhere along the line? Supposedly, it is the same engine as in the 656 and you hardly ever hear of any of those old sisters giving any trouble.

Anybody know?

Allan

Here's the answer........ in reply to Allan in NE, 12-03-2004 06:05:23
There was a point that IH was behind in production of the 560D than the demand, and they ended up shortening the curing time for cast blocks and using "green" blocks, which would often warp slightly after use. This slight warpage of the head would ruin gaskets and crack heads. A machine shop can plane a warped head and everything will be okay, but the use of the green blocks really did a number on those tractors. When IH learned of their mistake, they fixed it and were able to release a much better 282 out of the factory, cured and all. That's definately what Hugh is talking about, same with the 656's.

Allan: What ever IH did, they must have done it before end of 560 production. My 560D was one of the last and it went 11,000 hours turning 90 hp. Never had any head gasket problems. 656D was much the same although I never tampered with hp on that one.

a lot of years and a lot of improvements between a 560 and 656! i'm not really sure either but my partner in crime here at work is a former IH dealer mechanic and that's how he summed it up!
