MY FARMALL 400 DIESEL SMOKES SEVERELY WHEN STARTING ON GAS. IT RUNS WELL ON DIESEL BUT WHEN I SWITCH IT BACK TO GAS I CAN NOT SHUT IT OFF WITH THE KEY I HAVE TO STALL IT. IT APPEARS IT IS STILL INJECTING A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL INTO THE CYLINDERS AFTER BEING SWITCHED TO GAS. ANY OTHER THOUGHTS OR HOW DO I ADJUST FOR THIS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

If your 400 diesel is not shutting off on gas side, I'd say the ignition is not being turned off. Does it have a magneto or battery ignition. If magneto, you have to ground the screw on the side of the mag to shut it off. If there is no wire to that, it is not grounding and will continue to run on gas. Also, the mag should be grounded when you are on the diesel side to stop the sparks to the plugs. That is supposed to happen by itself when you switch the change over gas to diesel lever. Perhaps the linkage that works that has been disconnected or is not working for some reaon. If battery ignition, voltage to the coil has to be shut off to stop the tractor on the gas side. I suspect though that you have a mag, for it the battery ignition was on all the time, you would for sure have a dead battery. If you are getting black smoke, that is carb running too rich, which would be controlled by the choke. If you are getting diesel fuel into the cylinders while running on gas, you will get white smoke, which is unburned diesel. One way you can check also, is does the tractor stop when you just push the speed control lever to the shut off position without pulling the switch over lever to the gas side. If it does not stop when you do that, then something may be out of adjustment in the injection system.

When you switch back to gasoline, the compression ratio of your engine drops dramatically. even if the injector nozzles are still spraying a little, the engine should stop when you turn off the ignition.
if it continues to run after you turn off the ignition, either your switch isn't removing the voltage from the coil, or possibly the engine is predetonating (dieseling) because of excessive coolant temp., carbon build-up in combustion chambers,(carbon glowing) spark plugs are wrong heat range, or idle rpm too high.
if diesel fuel is still being injected after you switch to gasoline, you should have LOTS of smoke!
there are 2 adjustments on the injector pump to assure fuel shut-off. you have to remove the pump side cover, oil filler neck, and a 15/16 expansion plug to make the adjustments.
You might check the throttle linkage. any bent rods, or sloppy holes in the linkage could prevent the pump control lever from moving the designed amount.
