I've determined my M is 1940. Does anyone know where I can find some photos of similar vintage M to see how my tractor is supposed to look? thanks.

I belive the 1939 Hs had the gears cast into the trans cover case but the M might have them too

The tractors did not necassarily change by model year. The first few thousaand 1940 Ms had the angle iron seat support, slot top deck cover, differenr frame rails and pressed steel gas tank support. Other things that I can think of different on 1940 than late model Ms were headlight support bar, PTO, oil filter, lack of anti vibration reinforcements on hood, Dzus fasteners on hood, and slight difference in grille. Do not know when these changes were made but think all had been made by 1942 or 1943. There is no exact concensus as to when model years changed but most agree it was sometime in last quarter and not on new years day. Like most things on early IH you will find contradicting information on this.

For lack of something better to do I looked up some of the parts changes in parts book. I was interested because I too have 1940 M.
Seat and Deck top chaged at SN 9286.
Frame rails changed SN 23569.
Tank support, grille and fasteners changed SN24214
Head light bar SN 27270.
PTO SN 27996 and again SN 59956.
Oil filter SN 59393.

These numbers are from parts book am sure there is conflicting information from other sources.

In my opinion it would be very unusual to find a 1940 model M that did not have some salvage yard parts from other years. So yours may be different.

Unless the photo you find is an extreme close-up, you will not see any differances. Your 1940 M will look just like any other M, no matter what year it was made.

Go to the farmall Photo section on this forum, scroll down the page and there should be a Search bar, type in 1940 M and it should bring you lots of pics, or some guys might post them righ on here.
