Thanks for your answer. I tried this question a couple of times but yours is the first one that gives me a good answer and I appreciate your help.

I've been away a couple of days helping the hospital pay off their mortgage so had to look for a while to find your response.

This is my first Farmall so it is all new to me. I just got a full set of manuals from Binder Books and am set to put this old guy to work.

The "cotton" filter is also missing from the hydraulic fill cap which appears to need some kind of filter to keep out dirt, any suggestions?

Forgot, it is s/n F 30246 CJ with belly pump and reservoir, battery under fuel tank and non-live PTO.

Buying the set of manuals is definately a step in the right direction. You are right about the fill cap needing some sort of filter, but I am not real sure what material should be used. I don't think the original material was cotton, but rather some type of course wool. I used extra fine steel wool on one of mine, packed it in as tight as I could, but I am not sure that steel wool is the proper thing to use. Maybe someone else will jump in here and give some good ideas.
