I am getting a post hole digger and it says it works on 540 PTO only. I know that is the RPM of the PTO, but can the 544 run a 540 PTO implement?

Not familiar with the 544 but I am reasonably certain that it had only a 540 rpm pto, not 1000, nor 540/1000.

CNKS: For some strange reason 544, 656, 666 and 686 could be ordered with 1000 rpm PTO only instead of 540. I have never seen one, and rather doubt there are many around.

That's why I put the "reasonably" in front of certain. I was under the impression that the 544 was too small to need a 1000 rpm -- what hp do they usually start 1000 rpm pto's at, I thought it would be more like 70 hp? Or does that have anything to do with pto rpm?

CNKS: That is precisely why I suggested strange, given the fact the the 656 and 544 came in the 60s and that PTO was either or and not both. If you chose 1000 rpm that is all you had. I don't have any information on 504 but seem to remember that being an option on later 504 models as well.

When we look at mid 60s, 1000 rpm pto was really in its infantcy. Considering the amount of 540 equipment that would have been on farms at that time, I can't picture any farmer buying at tractor that size with 1000 rpm only. I think tractors from 7 up in the 06, 56, etc. with dual shaft PTO would have been tractor of choise if one wanted 1000 rpm.

I know myself, my 1st 1000 rpm tractor was 1066. It was dual shaft 540 and 1000. I might have went to a 1466 but sales literature was saying 1000 rpm only on that one. I had a Deere that had both. I certainly wouldn't have wanted my 656 or 560 to be 1000 rpm only, as I had haybine, baler, sprayer, 400 air planter, manure spreader that were all 540 rpm pto.

I just wonder if that 1000 rpm option, might have been used for specialty applications. Chisem Rider bean harvesters are one item that comes to mind. Harold down in Miss. Delta would know the answer to that. Other option could have been PTO driven hydraulic pumps powering hydraulic motors.

Hugh, this is strange. About 2 years ago, we traded a IH 400 4-row 38" planter for a Case-IH 950 6-row 30" with the 1000 RPM pump. The 686 was already set for 30" rows, but had the 540 PTO. I looked into the possibility of switching to 1000 instead of narrowing up the 786. The I&T manual says it can be done, but only by splitting the tractor and replacing the constant mesh gears at the front of the transmission. When I go to the IH parts books, they give no mention of any 1000 RPM PTO parts for any of the 656 series tractors. In the end, the 786 got set for 30" rows and the 686 got traded for a 3088. I'm very surprised that IH never offered a dual unit for the 656 series. I think some of the small British utilities even had the option of 1000.

KB: In my opinion when 04 - 06 tractors came out, IH basically said you small Farmall users can go to H%&^. The 606 was only ever produced as a Utility, and 504 was not much of a replacment for 300, 350 and 460.

By 1965 they did under presure from customers bring out the 656 and in 1968 the 544. Then they went off to Britain and Gremany and eventually produced a line of Utility tractors with transmission and PTO very similar to the big 06, 56 and 66.

How they ever figured North American farmers with hotter summers than Europe were going to tolerate sitting straddled a hot transmission, is more than I can imagine. Then they put these Utilities on the market for less money than a 544 or 666. IH basically killed the 544 and 656 size Farmalls.

That sizing thing really hasn't stopped, I doubt if there is much new iron on the market today with 6 cylinders and under 100 hp.
