Hi Guys, Went into town yesterday and was talking to the local "Red Mech" who is overhauling my 966. We got to talking compression ratios and the topic wandered around to my 686 with the 310 and how I'm always complaining about the fact that it smokes when cold and starts hard at lower temps. Anyway, he tells me, as you fellas did, that the problem has to do with their lower compression ratios. Says he has a supplier who makes 17:1 compression pistons for both the 310 and the 358 and after these stouter pistons are installed in these engines, that the german engines will start and run just like an american diesel. Dunno, when he gets my 966 done, I'm thinking seriously of having him dance thru my 310? Allan

How about a 484? in reply to Allan in NE, 12-01-2004 02:54:31
Does anyone know the compresion ratio for the D-179 in my 484? I've always thought this started a lot harder in moderately cold weather than it should. Might a change in pistons be a solution here, too?

Mark

Hi, I believe it is 17:1.

Hi Captn'

Nope, that 'taint gonna fly.

All you guys that are still puttin' the iron to the dirt are the lucky ones. It are I who is the one jealous of you guys.

Everytime that darned cowman puts up a picture of an old cow, I wanna write him and tell him to just knock it off! LOL

(But, I'm a gainin', slowly but surely, day by day) :>)

Allan: Actually I am quite surprised you ever doubted the expertise here at YT. Some of these guys have been improving German diesels for years.

686 looks good.

Mornin' Hugh,

No Sir, I never doubted anyone. The problem was tryin' to get my ol' pee brain to accept the fact that IH would actually put out an engine with only 15:1 compression.

After I came to accept that bit of startlin' info, all you guys made perfect sense. :>)

Onwards and upwards as they say...How's about finding me an open station 766D? Last one I need in my quest to buy back my youth. :>(

Allan: I did see an open station 766D with axle duals, about 30 miles south of here back in July. It had a for sale sign on it and looked to be in excellent condition. I would imagine it was priced accordingly. I was by again about week ago and it is gone. May just be put back in shed for winter. If your seriously interested I can ask a few questions. Problem here would be trucking even if you get a good price. I live about 35 miles from the border, and in spite of all the hoopla about the border, I see truck loads of tractors heading stateside almost weekly. just need your homework done for that one.

Might be just the thing for my Hydro too. He's startin' to get a little sluggish on cool mornings.
