Hello
I have a 1960 IH B110 truck with a 6 cylinder gas engine with a broken block. I was wondering what models of IH 4 cylinder Diesels would fit and how they would bolt up to the 3 speed manual transmission.

Someone told me that almost any IH diesel engine will have the same bolt pattern as the bellhousing on that transmission. is he right?

Thanks,
Russ

Schultzy: I don't think you will get enough power from any 4 cylinder IH diesel. As others said 282 and 301 will bolt right up. The biggest problem you will have converting any old gas truck to diesel will be rear end ratio. Most of those old gassers were turning somewhere between 2500 and 3000 rpm at highway speed. If you turn those diesels that high, they will not last any longer than the gasser, and probably will not save you any fuel. I doubt if you can find rear end gears to change that. Larger wheels and tires will help, but not enough.

The other matter you should consider even with those 6 cylinders, is power. GM, Ford and Dodge are all using engines over 360 cubic inch. They haven't exactly been a model of efficiency. They are turning them too high on rpm. Diesel efficiency comes from taking advantage of max. torque at or near 1500 rpm.

Years ago I had a 6.2 diesel with 3.24 rear end gears 1800 rpm was 60 mph. A neighbor had a Ford 6,9 with 3.06 gears. We both got close to 30 miles to the Can. gallon. Most of those trucks got 4.10 gears and didn't give any better milage than the gassers.

Hi,

I think Jeep and AMC have been using that old 258 for years haven't they? Bet you could easily find a replacement engine in any junkyard in the land.

Switching to diesel seems like a big headache to me.

His 60 model would not have a AMC engine. It is a IHC engine so 282 or 301 will fit.

You might post your message at www.oldihc.org. There was a thread recently about refitting diesels in something. Click below.

I think you can put a 301 or 282 right in with the right motor mounts for a truck.Don't know about what you do for vacum for the brakes probably use a pump.
