Re: Hey Kim - New Forum in reply to farmallman, 11-29-2004 05:28:02
farmallman: I am by no means the oldest guy on here, but I probably am in the oldest 10% of the group. As a group we are not a bunch of computer whizz kids. We do get it turned on, and do tend to answer some real basic questions. Amoung my group are guys that remember taking a new Farmall F-20, F-30, M, H, W4, W6, SA, 300, 400, etc to the field. For myself is was at 8 years of age on a W4 same age as myself in 1950. I remember taking to the field on new 51-H, 55-300, 58-130 and 62-560D. Along the way we learned a few items. Also amoung us are guys who worked as mechanics and got to learn something about all models. From the farmer point of view it was the ones we used.

There are also guys taking part in discussions that are also in the business of selling things. I have a hard time deciding just exactly where these guys real interest lies. I have a hard time convincing myself on taking advice from a salesman.

Now I am open minded to change. Progressive change to me over the years was change that readily sped up the the way we got things done. I have looked at several other forums and find them all much too slow. This one is very fast. I can come in at end of day, turn on computer and review just about everything new that has happened during the day in about 10 min. Also in that 10 minutes I can decide if there is anyone or any subject I can assist or assist with. I can tell you I'm here because I like being here. I don't intend to give all my senior years and hours to this. If it is not going to be fast and efficient, then you best scrap the whole new idea. I will not be here if I have to spend eons of time loggin on, etc.

Another item that has made this forum, is there are no such thing as a popular subject. If you guys wish to give priority to popular subjects, the forum will die. In fact it is my belief, we should have a committee to deal with real technical questions that make it to page 3 with no responce. This is what made this forum what it is, 96% of all questions get a reasonably good answer. I am sure most of my age group feel the same way, without us, what have you got?

I'm with you Hugh. I design frame frame/ATM networks networks, answer telcom questions, both simple and complex during the day. When I get home I kind of want to look around here, easily navigate the site and get some good advise from the folks that have been there, done that. I don't get as much seat time as I would like so I sure don't want to sit here watching a lot of fancy graphics when all I want is to get good sugestions on how to make the antiques run better and enjoy what time I have with them more enjoyable. This site is fine just the way it is, wouldn't change a thing.

I think the new forum software will allow Kim to do more work in less time....Certain items will be deleted automatically, and all in all, easier to run for the forum moderators...

Although I rarely post questions, it would be nice to have an ACCURATE and RELIABLE search function....

How can you beat this forum, and why do you want something slower loading and more complicated?

What doesn't this forum do that you are needing?

A lot of us are just simple "old tractor nuts", and don't need the latest electronic "bells and whistles". (We don't all have the latest electronically controlled tractors, do we?)

This forum works really well, and has lots of CHARACTER! I hope she NEVER changes it, but of course, CHANGE IS INEVITABLE!

I hope nothing happened to her. I'm sure we need her to run this AWESOME web site. I don't know about ya'll, but i won't be able to work on tractors as mush without the knowledge of everyone here.

What i don't understand is how she would be scared. I'm sure if she wanted to, she could block them from posting anything on here. I just hope she's OK

Farmallman, there are quite a few of us who are doing darn good just knowing how to turn the computer on. The current format of this forum is very easy to use, it's straight forward, without a lot of glitz and glamor. We don't need that high tech flashy stuff. Remember, this site is called Yesterday's tractors, not tomorrows computers. I'll bite my tongue now, before I say something that will get me the skillet.

BOINGGGGG GGGGG G Too late Rusty, but I agree totally with you. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are some of us who are computer gurus (Allan in Ne) but most of the rest of us do good to get the thing turned on with out a major glitch. Later, Harley

Again, the other forums work just like this one --you just find the switch and click on what you want.

I have mixed feelings about the login style of forum. Mostly because, in general, they are slower for us dialup people. I am thinking of going wireless, in that case there is no disadvantage. You simply set the thing up, click the box that says always logged in, and it works exactly the same, with the same ease of use as this one. You don't have to use the symbols, happy face junk if you don't want to, you do not have to create a profile if you don't want to, etc, etc. I use this forum every day, the login Red Power forum every couple of days, although I seldom post on it. My main objection to it is that the people over there tend to make it more of a social forum, and aren't nearly as knowledgeable about the letter series tractors. Otherwise, there is no difference in the ease of use, the forum is just slower.

Rusty,
Thank God I am not the only one who likes is straight forward. I too am not smart enough to figure out all this new fangled fancy stuff. "Keep It Simple Stupid", that is my motto.

Guys,

Have you even tried the new-style forums? It's no more difficult to use than this one, and in some aspects, it's LESS difficult.

Where is the problem? You go to the forum home page, just like here. Wanna talk Farmalls? You click on the Farmall forum, just like here. Wanna read a post? You click on the subject, just like here...

I use other forums that use the newer style and I like them better then these. You don't have to make a profile, but if you do you can personalize it and other people can get more of a feel for who you are and what you stand for. It might be a touch slower but hardly noticable in my opinion. These tractors aren't fast to begin with why would we need fast internet. We're use to going slow. And the search's are far superior to this one. You actually want to look up something like "removing front crank pulley" and it'll find what your looking for instead of "Farmall MD generator problems". My 2 cents
