Hope someone can help me out. I have a 1950 Farmall H and ever since I bought it the PTO lever has been stuck. The PTO itself turns free, but the control lever is stuck in the up position. When turning the spline end and pushing down on the control lever you can feel it wanting to move. Is there a fork inside that is stuck? I don"t want to force it and break something. What shall I do to get it working? Please let me know.
Thanks, Jim

I have the 118000 & up version of the PTO. Maybe the shifter lever arm inside the PTO housing needs to be freed up. And if I take out the plug on the side of the housing and the poppet spring and the poppet I can squirt some penetrating oil inside the unit and let it soak. Let the penetrating oil do the work, as they say "no worka hard, worka smart"

Most likely the lever is not in place in the shift collar.
Remove the PTO unit (park the tractor with the front end downhill or trans. fluid will run out) and inspect.
When the shift lever is up the unit should be engaged and not turning freely.
Gaskets & seals are available at your IH dealer.

I think the 40 pto will be different than yours. They changed about 118000 and up to what you should have. It should have a large bump on the rear instead of the small flat pto assy. First if it has not ever worked for you. Spray in down with wd40 or your favorite fluid. then tap it on up. It is probly just not up far enough to engage. If the rod is already free moving you might have the lever broken inside the pto housing, but I've never seen one broken just rusted from sitting up. There should be a spring sticking out of the housing that is the lever stop spring. It should give you a guide as to how far the lever will go up.

I have one that has broken the little lever off, and I had posted this scan from my parts catalog over on Red Power Magazine, maybe this scan will help him? This scan has the part that I am looking for on it.

I have a 1940 H, so I don't know if this will be the same for yours: The PTO shaft tip fits into the countershaft and rotates freely. I can't remember exactly, but the PTO lever rotates a metal spiral-like mechanism (it fits around the PTO) that pushes an outer shaft into a "keyed" bushing located at the end of the countershaft; this locks the PTO shaft and turns it. All of it is pretty heavy metal.
