Got a call yesterday from a man who inherited a 966 when his father passed away last year. Its a 1975 I think with 3760 hrs cab dual 18.4-38s full rack of weights ,new clutch, and says it starts up in about 3 seconds even after setting for several months. Says he'll take 4000 dollars. Its only about 150 miles from here. How much trouble were the TA's in these models? WE had a black stripe 1466 in Iowa and worked the guts out of that thing/ I see Allen and a few others have expert knowledge on these . Also allen I have an extra 1976 I.H. brochure featuring the black stripe tractors and most of the other 66 series literature as well. What do you think of this deal? Migraine

i think that for the price it would be a good deal. i have a 966 that i added a turbo to it. it takes some planning. when we had the engine overhauled the guy doing the work knew my plan and he pulled the crank and had the upper oil passages drilled out. nonturboed engines did'nt have this done. this helps cool the cylinder wall. we also pull on a bigger fan and oil and water pump. bascially 1066 stuff. the exhaust manifold is bigger and uses a bigger muffler. when it was finished it dynoed at 125 hp. and don't forget to put on a pryometer.

good luck!

Duane

Migraine, I am in the same boat with Allan, I am biased as a 4 yr. old with a double dip icecream cone. My 966 is as guttsey as they come. Will pull a 13 shank chiesel 8 to 10 in deep on first plowing. TAs are pretty trouble free as a rule. As most will tell you "Keep it Adjusted"
As far as turbos go I wouldn't do it. If you want a turboed tractor go find a 1066.
At $4000 I would have already been there and back before I told a soul. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I bought my 966 2 years ago, from a dealer. It had a Dual loader/grapple, 4200 hours in excellent condition. I paid 7200.

I would guess any machinery dealer or jockey would pay that, and turn it for a profit.
Looking through the local farm paper, I see 966's listed for $6500 to $7800 for one with 4000 hours and FH940 loader / grapple.
Like Allan says; if it would work for you, don't hesitate!

Migraine,

I'm really the wrong guy to ask on this one. Because, I'm flat out biased!

The 966 is not near the tractor that your 1466 was because the 14 has a 50% bigger engine, although the 966 too, will just plain work itself to death. The hydraulic T/As are a pretty tough breed all in all and don’t give a lot of trouble.

Ask him about the hydraulics tho, IH liked to use a steel gear against an aluminum body on their pumps. They just wear out in time. They have two pumps, the forward one handles the power steering, brakes and the hydraulic clutches; the rear pump takes care of the remotes and the hitch.

That "instant start" is a good sign too. On these 22:1 compression tractors, if they don't start immediately, something is very, very wrong.

If it were I, I would be hooked up to the trailer already at a cost of only $4K, but like I say, I'm totally biased towards the 9s.

Hope ya get it, ifn’ ya want ‘er,

Allan

What about putting a turbo on this thing? Can that 414 use a little more air and fuel?/ I have a turbo in the shed would need the manifold. I'll try to get some more info on the thing Thanksp.s. He says the sheet metal is straight as an arrow.

I put a turbo on my first 9; they are a straight-ahead, simple, bolt-on deal.

Dunno, never really impressed me much; probably because of that darned straight pipe and the extra noise. Guess I'm just an old fashioned purist. :>)

Oh, before I forget it, make sure there is no anti-freeze in the oil. These things use a wet sleeved engine and those lower seals will seep in time.

Allan
