IH 574 cuts out when throttle increased

Hi,

Been having a problem with my 574. Around mid season it startd needing a really long time to warm up, and when increasing the throttle one had to choke the engine or it would stall. I bought a carb rebuild kit and cleaned and refurbished the carb (except for the throttle shaft and gskets, it was the wrong one for my carb). I also noticed the venturi was cracked, but since I didn"t have one I put it back in. I got the carb back together and nothing seems to have improved. I didn"t mess with the idle adjustment, it seems fine. But I am confused on the main jet adjustment-I can"t back it out 4.5 turns as my manual says, it will fall out! The carb is a Marvel Shebler TSX 980 with a solenoid cutout.

Any ideas on where to go next? Am I barking up the right tree with the carb? Is it not adjusted properly? Could the solenoid be the problem--is there a way to make sure it is fully open? WOuld a cracked venturi cause these problems?

What happens is when I increase the throttle, the engine pops and snorts and then dies. Under full choke I can increase throttle but under a load it will die.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also wondering if there is a way to make this guy less of a gas pig, and advice?

Thanks in advance,

paul

One purpose of the venturi is to suck gas into the carb throat when the throttle is open. No gas or not enough gas makes it too lean so it won't run or will backfire.

An intake leak will usually affect the idle but not open throttle.

Are you sure you're adjusting the main jet and not the idle mixture? 4.5 turns seems like an awful lot, usually they are around 1.5-2. I'm talking carbs in general now, I'm not familiar with the 574 so don't hold me to that.

Hi Paul, If replacing that intake gasket doesn't
solve the problem as TL suggested, I think the engine may be starving for fuel. Are you sure the float level is set high enough? You mentioned that you've choked the engine and it still dies under load. I'd replace that cracked venturi and check the float level.

I had the opposite problem with a car.
It would start and run fine until you stopped and shutoff the engine. Then it wouldn't restart and
I just happen to call the Ford dealer in our area
was talking to their service manager and told him
about the engine flooding. He said Ford had used
floats made from composite material and it would
become gas soaked and then sink. I replaced the float and that solved the problem. My neighbor
had the same problem on a Chrysler and she had it
to every repair shop around here and they never found the problem. I told her that I thought it was the float and she took it back to a shop and they replaced the carburetor. They charged her $400.00. A float and gasket are around $25.00.

Our 674 gas had similar problems. It was the intake gasket leaking.Put a new one in and it has been ok ever since.

Hi TL,

Thanks for the info. Was your 674 idling ok and then dieing when you increased throttle or load? Or was the problem with the idle?

Paul

My 560 G did the same thing. Starving for fuel (choking richens up the mix by cutting off air, so this is a clue) so I drained fuel tank, pulled off fuel petcock and removed 50 years worth of insect legs, dirt and various other crap from the inlet to the bowl. Simple, but if it gradually got worse, and nothing else had changed, I'd bet dollars to donuts (where'd that phrase ever come from?) that's what's wrong.
