H replacing pistons and sleeves

I reciently had to tear down my H because it broke a piston and sleeve, shattered more like it. I was trying find my cheapest place for parts and was asked all types of questions I wasn't ready for yet. I spent most of this morning reading the archives and now I am even less sure of what I want to do. This will be long but here it goes.
I've always had good oil presure and don't have any leaks from my main bearings. The rod bearings have all looked good with no signs of scratches or wear. Right now it has the flat head pistons with the 3 7/16 sleeves and head number 8043-DC. All I want to do is replace the pistons and sleeves and I was thinking of going with the fire crater or step sides I read about this morning.
I only use this tractor for lawn work and plowing snow in winter, with the occasional leveling of a dirt pile. Does this sound like a good plan for someone that is a bit low with the funds right now. Or am I wasting my time?

Brain, If you have the extra money then the pop ups are the way to go, as said they will give you the extra power an the tractor will run like it's never had before. I suggest you look at the cost of what the pop ups are, new an used along with new rings against the a (1) flat top piston if I read correctly what you said. Also no matter what I myself would put new rings since you have to put one set in anyway thus even out the compression, alot of people would not agree with this but because they come in sets why not use all instead of one, unless you have the old set off the other piston. Again if I read right it sounds as if the tractor has been running for a number of years on the same rings an pistons. If it hasn't had a ring job in the last couple of years I'd put all new in anyway, you will see a markeded impovememnt. I look at this way, your not out to use the tractor for any type of pulling or heavy work thus the added expense of dome pistons is not needed. I know you more than likly don't want to here this an no one can make up your mind up for you. Yes it's nice to have the power but if your never going to use it what is the sense of putting out the money for it. Only my three cents add or take away a penny or two :o)

Thanks for your input. Yes, I do plan on replacing rings, piston and sleeves. From what I have read, I will go with "pop ups". I would like to use it for doing a little mowing work in the futher and that sounds like it would help out. Just waiting till I find a pull mower for sale.

Thatnks again guys.

My M has the fire crator pistons and my dads does not, quite a bit of difference. it sure convinced my to put the pop up pistons in if his ever goes down.

Brian,

Don't even think about that one. You are already in there and have to do the job and spend the money anyway.

Put in the pop-ups. It will make a completely different tractor out of it and will give you something on the order of another 10 additional horsepower. With a tractor the size of an H, that is a substantial improvement.
