Hi Jack, You need a good shop manual to show you the correct procedure for servicing those brakes.
Contact Christian that has posted on here to your post. He may have the solution to your brake
problems. Those brakes may be worn down to the rivets and when you have metal to metal your brakes are going to be weak and will take more effort to stop the tractor. Call your nearest IH
dealer and have them fax or mail you a zerox copy
of the 674 brake overhaul.

I have a 1981 car that has very poor brakes. It's brakes were under designed. I've had pickup trucks that had better brakes. I've changed the brake pads numerous times.

I'm surprised that Ford never recalled
these cars for that problem. The rotors were too
small for this car's weight and it should've had dual piston caliphers installed. They aren't even available to retro fit it. Good Luck, Hal

Hi, could you explain more about the foot brakes being weak? Are they spongy and you have to pump them to brake? If that is the problem then there is air in the system and they have to be bled.

If you search the archives for 684 or 674 you will find the procedure for bleeding the air out of the hydraulic brake system.

Good luck
JB2

thankyou Christian El Toro and JB2
I will probably get a shop manual to work it out as you sugested, i suspect it is the linings warn out but there is no squelling of metal against metal.
Today the clutch slppped to the motor was reving as I pulled out a tree with a chain but for a moment when i didnt realise what was happening the wheels failed to move. I pushed down on the clutch and then smelt the clutch linings. But i worked for another 4 hours pulling trees without a problem. Also I could not get it into gear at one time today I must have spent quarter of an hour trying then it slipped into gear thankfully. I was doing work the tractor was not big enough for.

thankyou for your prompt reply
No the brakes are not spungy. I had a MF 165 before this and the brakes on that had a mechanical linkage and were a lot easier to operate, ie light pressure on the left brake and the tractor would spin around on itself. THis is a hydraulic system so it should be even easier.
My parking brake is fully unoperational also although after reading postings here I believe it is independat of the foot brake i tried adjusting it but that did not work. THis is a very well designed tractor I like the gear levers on the left but brakes are important.
