I bought a 1942 M (serial # 52551)that needs the PTO oil seal replaced. The local Dealer says they don't carry seals for these any more. This tractor has the PTO with the flat rear plate and the seal on the inside of the oil reseviour. Does anyone know where I could find a replacement? Or, I have a 1946 Farmall M parts tractor (serial #120497)with the type of PTO with the seal on the outside of the resviour. Will the PTO assembly from the '46 M fit on the '42 M? Thanks for any help!

The PTO out of the newer tractor will not fit. The 39 M has a dog type drive and the newer tractor uses splined type drive.

Woodcuters serial # is higher than change to splines on counter shaft. 27997 up standard trans.
used splined shaft.Dog type used later on low
low gear equiped trans.

About your question on interchanging the units. I believe the bolt pattern is the same. I ran into the same problem on an H last year. The shaft inside where it engages and disengages is different. After pulling the top cover and doing some work you could swap these units. You should be able to find another seal somewhere. This would be a much easier fix.

It has more than one seal (assuming it is the original PTO, IH made 3 of them). There is a large o-ring, 59385 D, a felt washer, 59357 D, and the seal 59398 D. YOu might consider replacing the bearing also ST 204 A. My suspicion is that you have a lazy dealer. His computer should be attached to Case-IH's parts system. All he has to do is enter the numbers, he doesn't need to know if it's a 2004 tractor or a 1942. If he says the mumber is "invalid" then he can't get it. All of the seals and bearings are available from a place that specializes in bearings, or perhaps NAPA.

I got two for my 1940 M from my IH dealer about 4 months ago, but they had to order it from somewhere. The original is obsolete, and the replacement is half as thick. A lot of guys use two. I got several obscure things and they came in old stock boxes. There are a lot of old posts about PTO oil seals. They are available. I always ask for the parts guy that knows about old Farmalls, because they don"t all know how to find old stuff.

The 46 should work in your M unless you happen
to have low low first gear.

How can I tell if the '42 M has a low low first gear? Thanks!

If it was installed at factory the serial # plate would have extra code stamped on it.If you have experience with Ms it would be noticeable
slower than most in first gear.Theres a 99% chance
yours is standard.Don't see many with low low. Regardless it sound like you have to pull you're
PTO to repair it.When you remove it look at front
of PTO shaft,If it has splines you're 46 will work,if it looks like a big fat screwdriver bit
the later PTO won't work without changing transmission countershaft.

I believe the two units will interchange but don't quote me on that. It hasn't been too many years ago I bought that same seal for the pto on my 1940 H. It came directly off the shelf at my Case-IH dealer so you might want to go back to your dealer and make him work a little harder.
