Found a 706 Farmall gasser for sale (Central Wisconsin). Any particulars to look at? Bonus features? Horsepower? Seller doesn't know the year or hours which worries me that he hasn't had it long enough to find out and is trying to get rid of a headache. Asking $2000.

Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving!

I have a 63' model as well. I put a JD 146 loader on it (fits on) and purchased a cap off an 806 from a local junk dealer for $200.00. Im very satisifed. You must make sure its timed and you use 93 octane gas in it. I also use an additive to keep the valves lubricated.

Good Luck and as you can see, there are many fine people here to help you out if you get a need.

I have a 263 gas 706. Great tractor. Built with excellent brakes, hydraulics, steering and operator comfort. Transmission and rear end are bullet proof if it has been taken care of. Why??? Because it is basically the same as the 806 and 1206 with many many more horsepower. Sure .. TA may cause problems but when fixed properly it will last many years. Less face it .... we do not generally use this size of tractor for heavy tillage this day and age. If you keep the throttle backed off from full rpm the fuel consumption drops greatly. Doing light to medium work fuel consumption is not a problem. I do some cultivating and planting with mine and it will run along time on 5 gallons. The gas engines wear out faster. I have done sleeves, pistons, rings and bearings once. Then oil consumption went up and I did just rings. Many would say the IH 706 puts a JD 3010 or 20 to shame power wise. The tracor handles easy and turns tightly. A rough one (gasser)on an Iowa machinery auction would bring $1500 to $2000. Flat top fenders are worth $300 to $500 based on quality. Wide front end would be worth $500. A decent looking and good running 706 with fenders can easily bring $3000 to $4000 on an auction. Add a loader and actual 3 point and you could add easily $2000 to $2500. I have seen dealers wanting $7500 with a loader in good running order. Another feature I like about them is they are a fairly heavy tractor. Mine is filled with fluid so if you have enough power you are going to be able to pull through. Downfalls .... sometimes you have to play with the shifter. As prior posts have said that can be helped. Most have the 2 point but really that is not such a bad system as you can find 2 point equipment or add adaptors. Overall the 706 / 806 / 1206 actually made an attempt to catch up with John Deere. Many would say it did or ever surpassed Deere. The problem was the 56 and 66 series never really improved the 06 series that much. I think you get alot for your money with an 06 series tractor.

the 706"s were good tractors. they are rated about 74 hp. everybody else is correct with all their info. 2000 is a decent price even if it needs some work down the line. the gas motors are easy to work on. if it has a three point or fast hitch it"s just that much better. i have a 63" model with a ih 2000 loader and a year round cab. i run a 7" two stage blower and clear about two miles of road in the winter and cut, raked and baled about 5000 bales of hay this last summer. the shift design is known for problems but an easy fix is to upgrade to the 56 seried shifter. sorry for rambling on but i just love the 7"s to death.

I sure like them and have had a bunch of them and sold them to all of my good freinds and even got a die hard Deere lover to buy one and he has had it for 15 or 16 years now and will not part with it and it is a gasser that was a C263 and when it came time for rebuild we up graded it to the 291 we went from ft. to back on that one and it is like new . I was on it tuesday evening and picked two load of corn with a 325 new idea in wet feilds and she was doing a fine job in the soft spots .

I have a 706 I bought just to put a blower on and I like it just fine. If you use it to do heavy field work it will use gas. The price sounds right but you want to be sure of the mechanicals as repairs and parts add up. Mine has torque amp. duel pto good rubber and a cab. and is a wide front.

schmidty: Biggest headache of all will be the gas it burns. Probably 3-5 gal per hour on moderate work, 4-6 on heavy work.
