Again, thanks to all who responded to my last posting, sure making progress. After replacing the hydraulic filters and nearly 20 gallons of fluid, the hydraulic pump has quieted a bunch, the loader and power steering is some smoother. The previous owner said he just got the manuals in the mail yesterday, soooo.. while I am waiting.. Is there any simple way to get the ramaining air out of the lines or do I pick another project until the manuals get here.
Thanks!

The 656 hydro manual will tell you to turn the steering wheel to the far left, then turn it to the far right, do this a couple of times and the air will be removed from the system. Just changed the hydro filter last month on mine and I can tell you turning the steering wheel side to side works. (as long as all hoses are ok)
Thats my 2 cents....good luck

If you had to put in 20 gallons of oil i would pull the top link cover at the rear of the tractor where and checked to see if the hose 40376R1 is split. If this hose is bad you will suck air and with you putting in 20 gallons of oil you have raised the oil level up so the hose is under oil. When we had 656 still running around this would happen all the time.

I am just assuming I have air in the lines as I drained the fluid and changed the filter. In the filter box it said to follow manufacturers instructions to purge the system of air??? I still have to put in the last 3galllons of oil yet. Thanks for the tip on the line. If it still has a problem after I get through, that will be a good place to look.

Mornin' Roy,

Your 656 has two hydraulic pumps. The front pump is assigned the task of the remote hydraulics and the power steering. The rear pump is piggy backed onto the front pump and handles just the hitch only.

So, you'll probably have to cycle that hitch about 10 times to get all the air out of that circuit as well.

Under extreme demand from all systems, the two pumps will hydraulically 'throw together' and pressures are additive (less the proportioned oil to the power steering), but I'll be darned if I've figured out just how this 'quirk of the brute' works just yet.

The manual calls this instance "Full system pressure" :>)
