what would cause my starter to get hot when i have a battery charger on my M? not cranking it over, just sitting.

If it gets hot you are losing your battery charge faster than it is charging unless you have it on the very high setting for starting.

If your starter switch is sticking your starter should be trying to turn over, if not you probably have a short in the starter. Check your brushes for extreme wear.

Sounds like your starter switch is not disengaging completely. Does you batttery go dead regularly? If the starter switch is remaining in partial contact it will "leak" power through the starter and drain your battery. Try disconnecting the starter when charging, then disconnect when finished working and see if your battery holds a charge better.
