Worked on a friends B yesterday that has not been started in a couple of years, put in new plugs, points, wires, distributer cap and roter. It has a magneto and I am geting good spark, but it won't start, seem to be geting fuel. I can't find a timing pointer or any notches on the crank shaft pulley. Help me out on checking the timing on this thing. Thanks Ed

I believe the B is similar to the C. Take the clutch bell housing cover off (Circular cover about 2 or 3 inches in diamater) and rotate the crank until you see a mark on the bottom of the fly wheel marked DC 1-4. It is very difficult to see sometimes but it is there. To get you close I would do like other suggested and put your thumb over the number 1 cyl. till you feel the compression stroke. Then continue rotating slowly while someone looks through the hole to line that mark up with (as strange as this may sound) an indentation in the clutch cover that is on the front of the clutch housing. (It's a cover held on by 2 bolts between the clutch housing and the oil pan) There is a crease in the middle of it you need to line it up with. From there (if you need to) remove the distributor an rotate the gearing till the cap is pointing right at the #1 lead in the distributor cap. Put back together being carful you don't move the gears while reassembling and you should be timed and ready to go. Good luck

Josh

On those I take the plugs out and put my thumb over the plug hole of number 1 cylinder. Crank it slowly. When it pushes my thumb away on the compression stroke, I feel in the cylinder with a thin screwdriver for top dead center. Set the magneto rotor to the distributor contact for #1 and put it back together.
Hasn't failed me yet.

Hi Ed, If you give me your email address I can email you the timing instructions for the farmalls from the IT manual. I will uncover my email just hit the link above. That's if you still need them. And I can supply you with anything you may need for the H4 or J4 magnetos if you are in need. JON

"B" timing marks are on the flywheel.
