H magneto with reg
When did it last work? Did you buy it this way? Do you have a simple voltmeter? Pull the neg battery cable. Check the voltage between the cable and the batt. Should be 0. Check ohms between cable and ground. Should be 0. (not 100% sure about that, becuase of the way the reg is hooked in.) What test procedure did you refer to? Have you verified that the generator will produce the 7 or so volts required? Check the voltage at the gen terminal on the regulator when the engine is running. The wiring is pretty simple. The regulator is primarily a swithch to connect the generator and battery when the generator is producing a higher voltage than the battery
If there is no light switch, what about the push pull switch underneath? The role of this switch changed from in-closed to ground the mag, to out-closed to put voltage to coil ignition. If someone worked on this who was not aware of the change, they might have wired this to the ammeter. (Switch would have had to change too. Maybe you have the wrong one?) There should not be ANY connection between this switch and the charging system
Also, with a regulator, it won't charge until the rpm is up enough that the generator is putting out a little more than 6 volts. I've forgotten the precise numbers.
I'm working from memory here. My experience has been with an older one with the cut out and a 52 with regulator and battery ignition. Your's is between those. It's been about a year since I worked on mine. Anybody out there who thinks I'm saying something totally wrong, jump in, I probably am :)
