With a generator on an H tractor if the proper voltage regulator is used . Does it matter if you connect it Positive ground or negative ? I have a 12 volt converted generator ( not alternator) that was installed on the tractor but it is wired on the tractor for negative ground . Can I put it to positive ground if my regulator is a universal Pos/neg one.

Thanks
ED

As Bob M said, look for markings on your regulator, may be on the underside. If it says positive ground, and you have negative ground the life of the regulator will be shortened--something about different materials in the contacts.

Bob M covered it all except the switch wire should now go to the neg side of the coil if it isn't there already. Many times a change is made to neg ground without changing this wire. It won't make a big difference but will have some effect on power.

BE SURE to polarize the gen with the voltage regulator connected. Failure to do this could destroy the gen.

I've never seen neg or positive labeled regulators but they may exist.

Your regulator should say on the bottom of the base as to which ground is required most 12v onew were neg ground but you do not know which one you have so i would look.

Thanks everyone for your input on this. I was pretty sure I was right in doing this but I didn't want to ruin my new regulator or generator. It is a Pos / Neg regulator, so it can be used both ways. I'm in the process of putting the tractor back to 6 volt down the road as soon as I get the correct 6v lights.

Thanks Again
Ed

What about the starter?

My son wants his A to be original, which was positive ground, (I think).

Martin - The starter is insensitive to polarity. It'll spin the right direction on both pos and neg ground.

Eddy – So long as the regulator you are using is not polarity sensitive (most of ‘em are not...) and the coil primary is connected properly, nothing else on the tractor cares about ground polarity. The tractor will run fine either way.

Just remember if you switch to positive ground you need to repolarize the generator before you start the engine the first time. And you’ll need to swap the wires at the ammeter unless you don’t mind it reading “backward”.

How do you polorize a generator? I heard my dad talk about it but he never showed me.

Thanks, James

With the engine stopped, take a short wire scrap and momentarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator. The instant the jumper makes contact (you should see a small spark) you have successfully polarized the generator!
