I know there are many great minds on this site and I need some advice. I have a 300 utility that I just finished and it was working great. I moved it to get it in out of the weather and that's where the trouble started. I put it in reverse and backed it up and then it would not move in any of the forward gears. It will go into the gears, but when the clutch is let out, it loads up and dies. Won't move at all except in reverse. Did something come lose in the trans? I can clutch it and start it in any gear but it will die when I let the clutch out. I am going to pull the shifter housing off today and see if there is anything that looks out of the ordinary. Anyone have any suggestions?

My 300U used to do it all the time, especialy when slapping into reverse (Is yours hard clutching?) After running it awhile the clutch gets hard to push down and I would slap the Gear lever quickly with out being fully dissengaged and get the girl stuck in a couple of gears. Not a hard fix. Just remove the to an duse a large screw driver to line things up and replace. I love that 300U but hate its clutch!

Been there. Done that. I have H's but it sounds like you do not have all the shifter forks engaged or the shift mechinism is worn so that it is in two gears at the same time. The latter is easiest to fix. It can happen because the tip of the shift lever has worn and slides by the notch of one shift fork instead of moving it, or because the notches are worn and rounded. By working the shift lever around from rev to first you should be able to line it all back up. You can hear and feel it when it moves the shift fork.
If you have had the top off the tran then you could have missed one of the forks setting into the shift collar on the gears.

I have not had the top off the trans yet. It would make more sense that they are worn because I have not taken any of the forks out. Would it be better to take it off or just try to line them up by moving it back and forth? It seems that it is hard to get out of gear if there is a load on the tractor I don't know if this has anthing to do with it. Never any trouble getting it into gear but out is tough sometimes. I may take the top off just to look at it and see if it is worn.

Thanks,
Bill (also in Texas)

Sounds like it's in two gears at the same time. If it's been a while since it's been in use the shift forks may have picked up some rust. Each fork has at least one spring and ball bearing that keeps downward pressure on the fork. (Called poppets)
The H I just finished had the shift rear guide broken and part was in the bottom of the trans case. That let the ball bearing fall out of one of the shift forks and broke the spring.
But if you haven't been in it yet, I assume you have been working on the motor. If you don't know the history of the tractor a look could prevent some serious problems. Not easy to do though. But by playing with the shift lever you should be able to get it back into neutral, then be careful when you shift from one gear to another. Don't shift from reverse to third. shift from reverse to neutral then to third and give the shifter time to lock into place. At least you can get it out of the rain.
