Need some help on figuring out what the kid brought home today. Its either a 400 or 450. Iam have a problem telling which. Right side of eng. block is c356980r2. right side of clutch housing is 359026R2. Right side of trans. is 358840-R1. Left side of bell housing is 3272s on a plate of metal. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The 450 has a splined, new style steering wheel and the fast hitch with draft control. The 400 has the older keyed steering wheel and the early type fast hitch with the lift arm that bolted to the top of the rear-end/tranny cover. But with people building a tractor out of parts tractors, you could have a hybred.

Im guessing you have a 450,because if it was a 400 with low tractor serial # 3272 as you have the
engine cast # should end with R1 instead of R2.
Look on very bottom of clutch pedal,if it has a bolt with a lock nut on it to limit clutch pedal
travel, its a 400, if not its a 450.Several other ways to tell, but engines get changed more often than clutch pedals.

Dente,Look at the fuel tank,If it is a flat bottem it is a 400. 450s have a large dimpel on the bottem that was aded for extra capasity so they could run till noon on a tank of gas. At least that is the story I was told! KJM

My dad had a 1955 model 400 and we bought the extended gas tank for it. That was an option, not a identification factor.

Wayne: Just kind of curious in your responce, would that extra size on fuel tank eliminate the possibility of belt pulley attachment.

The reason I ask this is 656 diesels had second battery just about the same location on chassis. I'm hearing rumblings that the battery was moved back by fender on 666 and 686.

As horse power started its climb in the mid 50s, one of Farmalls shortcomings was size of fuel tank. I found the 560, 656 and 1066 diesels lacking fuel tank. 300 was terrible so I can well imagine what the larger gassers were like. 3 to 4 hours between fill ups was kind a pain in the butt.

Hugh, the belt pulley gear box would work with 450
tank.Trouble for me with 450 is the fuel bowel is almost as low as carb.Since West Virginia is not
to flat, when fuel in tank was low tractor would run for hour on flat but if turned uphill die from
lack of fuel to carb.

Hugh,

The second battery on the 666 and 686 diesels lives back by the left fender. This one is missing the hold down.

Dad had both models, a 400 and 450 Farmall. The 400 had a steering wheel with the exposed steel hub where the 450 had the "fancy" steering wheel.
Also there was a valve on the right side of the cowl on the 450 to switch from double to single acting hydraulic. Yes you could still have a belt pulley with the larger gas tank as our 400 had both.

Feller I was working for loaned his 450 gas and a chisel to a neighbor. Neighbor brought the rig back to Frank and said, "well Frank,I got 11 ft.to the gallon" They will do alot of work but are gas hogs.
