Buying something someone doesn't want to sell.

The other day there was a post about getting rid of items that weren't used for many years. I want to add my 2 cents. I have had cheap people want to buy things from me that I haven't used in years too. The problem is, they always want to pay me practically nothing. I fully realize that the item is not a lost treasure or something but I feel that if I am going to get not much for it, why not keep it. I also know that it will probably go down in value in time or could increase (not as likely too). If I want to give it away I can also give it to who ever I want. I would rather have something turn to junk rather than practically give something away to some of those cheap folks. Also, there is nothing wrong with someone parting out a tractor, etc. Did anyone ever wonder where good used parts come from. Just me ranting.

So let me get this straight. Instead of making a few dollars on something you either don't want or don't need, you'd rather make zero dollars on it and have it go to waste. This denies it to someone who would put it to good use and junks up your property at the same time. Not sure I understand this logic, but to each their own.

I always buy as cheap as I can and sell for as high as I can. That doesn't often mean I make any money.

I say try to get all you can for it. If you've put money in it odds are you can't get it all back out. So get all you can. Don't be shy about your price. It takes a lot of patience. Fix a fair price (with a buffer) and hold to it. Put it on the web anywhere you can find for free or cheap. Put it in front of the house and in the local paper. Put it on e-bay with a reserve you can live with. If it doesn't sell you owe listing fees but you can often sell afterward to bidders.
Worst thing is to get over anxious or be in a position where you have to sell.

I hear you, John. We don't have much that sits around, but we have had some neighbors on both sides of this deal. We have had some that agree with you, and some that give it away just to see it used. What I hate to see, is someone cheap steal something from someone when they are unaware of the value of it. A neighbor lady after her husband passed away sold his old JD unstyled B for nothing, not realizing its value. I am sure the guy that got it justified it be saying, "she wasn't using it," or "its going to a good home." BS Its worth what it is worth. I have no problem with haggling for a sale, I have no problem with the seller wanting to see his or her item used more than they care about the money, but stealing just isn't taking something for nothing, sometimes it is taking something for next to nothing and stepping all over the unsuspecting "seller" to do it.

Also, if a guy wants to let his farmall sit in the weeds and rust away, let him. It may be a shame, but it is his to deal with. If it doesn't bother him, it isn't going to bother me. Sooner or later, someone is going to get a chance to part it, restore it, or scrap it.

Nothing angers me more than to see some useful equipment rusting away, and an owner that wont sell it. I have given equipment away that i didnt need or knew i would never get a chance to work on. Best intentions. . . I"ll get around to it. . . . .

If that is what angers you most, you don't have much conflict in your life. You are truly a fortunate man. In our region we just had a mother starve two of her children to death, there is a serial rapist on the loose, and the county government just told us we couldn't use 50% of our land. Whether someone else is making use of their private property is way down on my list of concerns.

And I really doubt that most people realize just how much time and expense is involved in getting those used parts up to a condition where they can just be bolted on and used.

Ahh steveormary a fellow pack rat! I suspect we really take too much satisfaction from finally finding a use for that whatever we had stored and probably tripped over all the years. We also are very unlikely to change. dick davis
