Super A Hybrid???

I just moved back to the country and bought a Farmall Super A (serial number 256199) from my recently-widowed neighbor. Since the carburetor's float pivot pin was severely pitted and the main gasket was in poor shape, I bought a carburetor kit and hit a snag. The kit for the above serial number didn't fit. Further investigation revealed an engine block serial number that looks like 354898 with a casting date that looks like *6-20-X*. The carburetor is a Zenith, not a Carter, etc.

What sort of a hybrid do I have here??? and what do I tell the carburetor kit merchant on my second attempt?

Thanks for your help. [I found the answer to a starter problem on this forum 2 days BEFORE I experienced the problem!!!!!]

If you can't find the carb number as SAm suggests and you have a Case-IH dealer handy, take the old gasket or the fuel bowl with you and match it to his computer diagrams, as there were 2 or 3 Zeniths, most parts are probably the same, but the gaskets are different.

Your tractor serial number looks to be a 1948 (I haven't checked, just click "Serial Numbers" to your left under "Research & Info". Your block serial number would appear to be in 1954. Now the casting code you posted appears to be for the 20th of June 1952. I would suggest you try and clean your block serial number a bit better because I can't see how you can have a '54 serial number and a '52 block (not that it would be impossible:). You should probably check the rest of the tractor as all of the major cast components should have the codes on them and that'll give you a better idea when it was built. As to your carb. problem I think all of the Zenith carbs have a small circular disc on the top surface which will yield a model number if you can clean it well enough. Hope this helps, SAm in NS

Folks, thanks for the help.
Regarding the carburetor: I already had the small circular disc on the top surface as clean as a pin... just didn't know what I was seeing. It shows model no. 12613A with the accompanying no. of 375560R91 (see post from "Kevin in Va." on 08-16-2004 04:04:53).
The "Tractor Carburetors - OEM Cross Reference Guide" lists this carburetor as
OEM # -- Carb# - Manu. - Applic. --- Engine
12613A - 161X7 -- IH -- C113,C123 - A;B;C;SUPER C
[note: it doesn't mention Super A!! and it doesn't show a rebuild kit].
Fortunately I DO have a Case-IH dealer about 8 miles away and I've seen his computer searching for a sediment bowl. I'm much closer to a solution on this problem.

Regarding serial/casting numbers: The 354898 # (including the R1 suffix) IS behind the oil filter... and finally (with the aid of a 1 mil candlepower light) I found the stamped-in serial number plate: ----- ----- --- | FCM G| | 155540 | ----- ----- ---
That's right -- ONE-5-5... [It is smaller than I imagined after seeing the casting numbers and is behind the coil and exactly hidden by the throttle rod.]
The casting number 351687R1 is cast upside down on the very back of the clutch housing. The date *9-22-47* (all *'s look like slotted screw heads) is cast in the transmission below the shift lever.

The block date of *6-20-X* is still a puzzle. The right screw head image appears to be jammed up against the intersection of the X.

Any further help with these numbers?
Thx, Dan

It looks to me as though you have a 1948 Super A with a 1952 Super C motor. The prefix for the C/Super C was (I think) FCM, and the serial number corresponds to a late 1952 Super C. This also matches up with your block casting date. So you probably have the C-123 engine as opposed to the C-113 engine that was in most Super A's. It is also probably turning a bit faster. Just out of curiosity, do you have a water pump? Hope this helps, SAm in NS

Uh... well, I don't SEE a water pump. There is a radiator hose neck bolted to the top, front, center of the block. At the bottom of that neck is a bracket which holds the fan shaft with a 2-slot pulley. The larger belt is driven by the drive pulley on the crankshaft. The smaller belt drives an alternator. I don't see any other possibilities for a water pump... just the direct-drive hydraulic pump.

354898 is probably the block's casting number, not serial number. That would be correct for a 1952 Super A or Super C (still a replacement block for this tractor). The casting number is behind the oil filter, the serial number is on a machined flat above the distributor (with prefix FAAM or FCM depending on what it came from).
