Just purchased my first tractor, a 1950 farmall h. Got the generator rebuilt by a local who told me it was original. Also I purchased an owners/operators manual from binder books. With all that said I installed the generator, and found that my battery wasnt getting any charge. In going through the wiring diagram the wire leads from the generator to a voltage regulator, which is not on my tractor, So can anyone out there tell me if by this year the regulator was built into the generator, or am i missing parts?
Thanks in advance
MD

Be sure to polarize the regulator and gen together, otherwise you can kill the generator.

WSR MD - You'll find the Farmall/Delco electrical systems pretty simple compared to alot of other systems you may be familiar with. How your's is wired depends on whether your tractor still has the original cutout relay (2 terminals and is mounted on the generator), or has been refitted with a voltage regulator (4 terminals and may/may not be mounted on the gen).
I have listed Bob M's Epson site below showing typical wiring diagrams and troubleshooting charts for both types of systems. I have also listed my email address so that if you need some pictures i can email you some, Red at one time had a very good picture of the generator, relay box an guage panel with wires connecting to all, but I'll be darned if I can find it in a seach of the site :o(

The regulator is not built into an OEM generator. You are either supposed to have a cutout regulator mounted on the generator or a true voltage regulator mounted somewhere else -- mine has a cutout relay. It is always best to take the generator and regulator/cutout relay to the repair shop together, then the guy can adjust both of them together.

MSR,

Regulators were never built into the generators. You're missing a regulator.

They were usually mounted on the generator or just ahead of the ignition switch area.
