I took the pump off of my 300U to replace seals and now I'm not sure how to put it back and line up the gears properly. My IT shop manual says to bring up the number one piston on compression and keep turning the engine until the last timing mark lines up with the pointer. Seems like the engine has gone to far past top dead center to fire number one for that setting. Can anybody give me some advice. I've got to get this thing back together before my outdoor shop turns cold and nasty.

Well heres how I did it on a 450 this summer, I put the pump back on. Marked the out side of the dist. for number one cylinder, removed the cap and lined up the rotor with that mark. You also need the crank where the book says. Then just hold the rotor at #1 and install. After that its just a matter of timing it.

You have my sympathy on this if you've moved the crank. When I did it I was just careful not to turn the crank and just noted the position of the distributor drive dog when I took it apart and made sure it was the same when I put it back together. Worked fine, though it took a couple tries 'cause of the helical cut gears.

Fred,

Me too. Gotta mark the distributor location as a very first step. Then it is just a matter of gettin' er back where it was.

The actual relationship of the pump gearing to the timing string really doesn't matter as long as that distributor and the crank are timed right.
