Mornin" I am stumped, turn the key; push the starter button and "snap" or "click" is all I hear at the starter. Had the tractor tuned up a couple months ago. Yesterday, instead of deer hunting, I took the solenoid off, cleaned the contacts/wire connectors/copper strap and got them "shiney, bright and tight" as one guy on the N board talks about. Was all excited for good results as the corrosion was bad. Small wire on solenoid and another wire that must run juice somewhere (didn"t trace it) is quite badly cracked (could be my problem). Any info would be appreciated as I could have played...err..ahhh...worked with my Farmall. Thanks in advance. Thanksgiving week and I am thankful for this - informative-enlightening-funny comments - message board, among other things. Stars sure are beautiful and bright this mornin". Gonna go watch an Andy Griffith episode and have some hot chocolate and will check back to see ifn" there"s some other early Sunday mornin" risers.

Al - In addition to the advice below check for the starter bendix jammed into the flywheel ring gear. (This happens a lot as the ring/bendix gears become badly worn.) Loosen the starter mounting bolts enough so you can pull the starter back and wiggle it around a bit, then retighten the bolts and try it.

Or if your tractor is parked on hard ground put the transmission into road gear and manually rock the tractor back and forth until you see the fan blade move. Then try the starter again.

If either of these fix the problem figure on replacing the bendix and/or ring gear for a permanent "cure"!

i have this problem on occasion,it comes down to a battery cable end usually on the positive side,(i always pull my cable off when i'm done using it,).i was working on getting mine started one day and it would not for the life of it turn over ,i finally just held the starter button in and after about 3 seconds she started smoking under the dash,so think to myself the button bit the dust,so go get a new one and thought just for the heck of it i'd clean the cable ends real good and it fired right up and hasn't given me trouble since, but when that button does die i got one,

Al L, simple..put a jumper cable on, boost the tractor..if it kicks and fires you know it is a battery /connection problem...if it clicks its likely time for a new solonoid. I had a similair thing happen and my battery was real old so I replaced the battery..then the battery would be dead in a few days..turned out the solonoid was toast and it would just about kill the battery starting the tractor, took about 5 minutes to put a new solonoid on and I've been happy for the last 8 years..getting close to battery replacement again..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Al, Is your battery fully charged? If it is
remove the ground cable and clean the battery terminal and battery cable. When you have the
ground cable disconnected from the battery remove
the battery cable at the solenoid and at the battery and clean them too. Then reinstall these cables and then install the ground cable. Replace all of those cracked wires too.

If you have a hand crank see if you can turn the engine over freely. Be sure the tractor isn't in gear and the brakes are set. If the engine turns freely with the crank try starting
the engine with starter. If it still clicks with the key on, try shorting across the starter solenoid with a screwdriver to eliminate the starter button. Check the specific gravity of the electrolyte (acid) in the battery cells. They should read fairly close to one another. Somewhere around 1275. This is critical in the wintertime. If one cell is a lot lower, your battery may need replacing. Good Luck hunting
and have a nice Thanksgiving, Hal from MD
